Here is what I am using in my little studio
DAW: Sony ACID Pro 7 (Yes Really!)
Computer: self made behemoth
Interface: M-Audio Profire 610
A/D Converters: Black Lion Audio Sparrow 2 Channel
D/A/Monitor control: TC electronics BMC-2, 2 Channel
Outboard Pre Amps: Black Lion Audio Auteur
Outboard Compressors: ART Pro VLA modded with NOS RCA Tubes for the Preamp stage
Summing: Black Lion Audio Modded PM8
Mics: Shure SM7B, SM27, SM57 x2, Beta 58a, Neuman KM 184 (just got it for acoustic guitar recording, Yay!)
Monitors: KRK VXT 4
Room Treatment: Mixture of GIK and ATS Broadband 4"x24"x48" (8 pannels in total)
Guitars: Gibson Les Paul Standard, Epiphone Les Paul Standard (heavilly modded to 50's set up), Fender Reverberator, Martin 000-15
Amp: Fender Blues Junior NOS, Waves GTR 3.5
Soft Synths: Ni Komplete & Session strings, Garritan Personal Orchetra, Toontrack EZ Drummer
VST Plugs: Waves SSL 4K, Waves C1, Waves Supertap Delay, Waves ren Verb, Bootsy ferric TDS. That's all I allow myself to use trying to keep things simple

Recording set up: Mic>Auteur>Sparrow> SPDIF to Profire into computer

Mixing set up: I mix into 5 sub busses to get 8 outs to use the analog summing to a stereo master, so 1&2 Stereo Gits, 3&4 Stereo Drums, 5&6 stereo Keys and FX, 7 mono Bass, 8 Mono Vox then:
DAW> Profire D/A 8 Outs> BLA PM8 summed to 2 outs>(Sometimes slap the VLA across the Outs as a Mixbus comp)Sparrow>SPDIF>Input bus in ACID(sometimes slap a VST SSL Masterbus Comp here)>track to record summed 2 track>master outs to SPIDF>BMC-2>Monitors (allows me to monitor the outbourd summing while I mix) and 2 x BCF 2000 control surface to give me 16 channels of hands on faders

Rather a convoluted mixing set up but lets me get a little bit of analog feel without having to buy a desk

Pre-Amp: M-Audio Fast Track Ultra 8R

Monitors: Rokit 5's

Plug-Ins Frequently Used: Waves Diamond, Nexus, Addictive Drums, Drumagog, Melodyne.

Wow... $5000 worth of software and maybe $500 worth of mics/preamps/monitors?

I think if it were me, I'd sell the Waves Diamond Bundle and re-invest in some higher end mics and pres...

Better tracking will make your mixing a lot easier...

Just sayin...

Oh, let's be holier than thou. This thread is not called "Do you have tracking problems? Do your mixes suck? Post your rig and we'll help you analyze your issues."

I have no tracking problems. I have no mixing issues. My recordings sound good in my opinion and in the opinions of many, many others. I'm sure they don't sound as hot to some, though.

I was lucky enough to score some software from a closing studio I interned out of. What am I supposed to do? Not take advantage?

So...anyways. Check your condescension at the door, please.

Seems to me he was implying you maybe had some questionable software. If you bought it legit from a studio, then good on ya.

You'd be surprised how many people show up here, first post and say, "I have a mic I found in the trash and a list of software totaling many thousands of dollars"-then demand step by step instruction on how to hook their mic up to the computer to pro sounding cds. A lot of the people around that actually pay for stuff and put in the time to learn something take that as a bit of a slap in the face. Glad you aren't one of those guys. :):D

I bought Record/Reason, Melodyne and Addictive Drums from Guitar Center (Where I work in Pro Audio) and grabbed Waves, Nexus, and Drumagog for $550 from the studio before they closed.

Even if I didn't get a great deal on them and happened to download and use them, he can still keep his comments to himself, no matter which way he attempted to belittle me.

What a way to welcome a new member to the board after his first post. I hope more are like you and less like him.

Like I said, glad you're on the up n up. The freeloaders get run off pretty quick and aren't really welcome here. I don't make the rules and I'm not one to jump on someone's case, but... just sayin, thats how it is around here.

Whoa... Might wanna lighten up a little on the energy-drinks there Sport.. ;)

Glad you're stuff is legit, and welcome to the boards :)

My post mainly was reflective of the fact that you have some of the lowest-grade drum mics on the market, and use high-end, post production 'fix it in the mix' software (i.e. Drumagog and Melodyne).

Nothing wrong with using Drum Replacement or Pitch Correction plug-ins. My point was just that if the tracking of the drums was better going in, perhaps you wouldn't need to 'replace' them.

If you're happy with your process, then awesome! :)

I haven't heard anything you've recorded, so there was no intent to belittle your work... Just an observation based on your post.

Again, welcome to the boards.

:)

Well that's the only reason I own Drumagog, is because I have weak drum mics. If I had the money to get better drum mics, I definitely would. But I'm not going to pass on a deal for that software for that price.

The pitch correction plug-ins have nothing to do with my microphones. It has to do with those who can't sing as well they'd like to think, lol.

As far as Addictive Drums goes, I use that through my craptacular Alesis DM5 electronic kit because I really don't like the sounds in the module.

Sorry if I jumped down your throat, but being around forum communities for 6-7 years, most people that respond in the manner that you did are usually assholes.

When one lists one's stuff, it sounds plentiful and grandiose, with all those letters and numbers, NT 706, PZ6000 and whatnot. But it ain't really. My stuff is pretty cheap and cheerful, the low end of the gene pool so to speak. Not even entry level, more like "No entry" level ! :D
But it gets the job done and I have fun.

I do mostly location recording. This is me in front of my "portable" rig in 1976.

118654787.jpg

I upped the ante to an 8 track later that year and in 1977 went to work for a pro audio company and sold all my gear. I am just getting back into it now. Currently my location rig consists of:
2 x Presonus Firestudio
1 x Presonus Digimax FS
1 x ART Digital MPA
1 x ART S83 8x3 way mic splitter
1 x ART HeadAmp 8
2 x Tascam VLX-5 monitors
2 x JBL 4328 "desktop" monitors (at home)
2 x JBL 4430 not "desktop" monitors (at home)
AMD quad core computer
Being mostly a location operation, I would have great fears of owning high buck mics, so, my mic collection is:
1 x EV 868
1 x SM57
2 x MXL 2001
2 x MXL 603
2 x AKG Perception 220
1 x Heil PR20
2 x Countryman Type 85 FET Direct Box
assorted stands, clips, etc.
Reaper with assorted plugins

I have two spare Firestudios that I may be selling in the near future. I use one at the house that I have on the market here, and once the house is sold the Firestudio will be of no use to me. The other is just a spare, just in case.

After seeing some of your set-ups I'm kinda embarrassed to even post my little rig. But here goes nothing.

Mics: AKG Perception 120's X2, EV Cobalt X2, Shure SM7B (I needed one good mic, most expensive thing I've bought thus far).

Recording: Fostex MR16, Roland Edirol w/ Sonar software. Computer is a Gateway w/ Windows XP Media.

Monitors: M-Audio something 40's. Little guys, they're gonna need a sub for sure.

Headphones: Audio Technica studiophile somethings. They look cool, and were marked down from 150 to 45, can't be bad.

Drum-like thing: Yamaha YDD60, it was refurbished for something like 85 bucks. Just a thing to fart around with, lots of fun though, I can't play drums, but for that price it's a blast. Got a PDP snare stand for it too, built like a brick shithouse and half the price of it's DW counterpart.

Guit: Epi LP Classic, this is a nice guit, ocean blue over quilt maple.

Basses: Rickenbacker 4001, Epi Thunderbird (a 2000, not the current POS), EBMM SUB, Warwick Dolphin SN TCS, Warwick Streamer STD, Warwick Fortress, Warwick Corvette $$, Warwick Buzzard (series 1, a 1990). Fender Precision STD.

Just curious, to see what people are generally working with on this forum
