M300 Series with Fostex R8?

Hey guys,
I'm talking with a member on here about buying a Fostex R8. It's a great price and I'll buy it (if he still has it when I have the money.) But I've been reading a lot about the M312/308 etc boards. Would these be a workable option with this deck? (I'd love to snag a 308b/312b if anyone is selling one around new years time frame)

I'm trying to get my set-up done and hopefully done inexpensively (as opposed to cheap.) Thanks for any advice you can give.

I'm not *all that familiar* w/ the 3xx series boards, but IMO that would be a good matchl especially the 312, depending on how you like to route your signals. The 4 buss isn't a problem either. In fact, again, depending on how many tracks you do at once I would guess the R8 is normalled like hte 80 -- the inputs to tracks 1-4 are normalled to 5-8. Also, with teh 312, you'd have four effects returns.

Connection-wise, the M300 series is perfectly suited for the R-8 as both use the standard -10db RCA pin connectors, though the mixer is probably a good few steps higher in over all quality compared to an R-8...sort of like having Mario Andriette race in a stock factory car instead of a custom race car.

Yeah, I kinda figured as much, but I'm not made of money and with a wife and two kids I have to purchase smartly and efficiantly. The deal I'll be getting on the R8 is sick and I'm quite ok with a lower fi sound. So, yeah, I dunno. I'm excited to try it. I'm glad that the connectors and nominal levels are the same. Thank you.

I can relate, Nate...Wife and 4 kids here.

My 2p: I wouldn't consider the R8 as lower-fi at all...I've some tremendous stuff recorded on that and the Model 80...very nice and with the advantage of 1/4" economy...I think an M-300 and an R-8 woul d make a great combo!

My 2p: I wouldn't consider the R8 as lower-fi at all...I've some tremendous stuff recorded on that and the Model 80...very nice and with the advantage of 1/4" economy...I think an M-300 and an R-8 woul d make a great combo!

I love it. The R8 has always held some weird appeal to me. Maybe it's that most ppl dig tascam (which I do too) maybe it's the detachable faceplate, or the handle, I dunno. It just has some weird allure. So thanks. I do appreciate it.

Well I tell you what, AFAIC having that connection with a piece of gear is nearly important as the gear itself. That factor can insspire and that comes through in the work you do with it. So it is certainly of importance that you are drawn to it. I'm that way about the 234 and 388...My MM-1000 too. I just like 'em and its part of the reason they sound good to me. I expect them to because I'm drawn to them "just because".

Odd. I had an R-8 for a while back in the early 90's and found it to be pretty thin sounding and once I moved onto a TASCAM 38 with the matching dbx units, the sound seemed a hell of a lot meatier! Though the R-8 was indeed a very well thought out piece of gear.
