Then the saying should go ......

Close enough for horseshoes, hand grenades, and modded MXLs! :D

For SOME reason it is always the guy (gal) who claims to have a locker full of the expensive mics who also has a bunch of modded MXLs that "sound just like expensive mic X", yet still has a locker full of expensive mics. Why?

I suppose I fit into that category to some degree. I have a lot of expensive mics, and some very inexpensive mics that have been modded.

Before answering, it might be worth considering why many professional guitarists that I know own well over 200 guitars? Why? You can only play one at a time, and there's really only 2 types - electric and acoustic.

Mics are a similar passion. The #1 reason for me is that when you state that they "sound just like the expensive mic X", that's kind of misleading. It's rare that two mics sound exactly the same. To the unschooled/untrained ear, they are not going to hear the difference between a stock MXL and an Elam 251. So to them, they are exactly the same - sound wise.

But as one works with these tools, their personalities start to emerge more, and you begin to understand why one may be a better call in the situation at hand.

Although "very similar" at a casual listen, they may react very differently when pushed hard - one may break up sooner. Or one may have a lower noise floor. Or perhaps one may just be the favorite of a good client.

I have them (the cheap modded mics) for a variety of reasons : Because they fulfill a purpose that is not quite attainable with another mic (like guitars, no two mics are really EXACTLY alike), because I LIKE collecting mics (GAS), and because there are times when I don't want to put a vintage or expensive mic in harms way.

So how many microphone would you say you own Dr. Bill?
I'm in the same boat with G.A.S.

I'll get working on that VSTi right away! :)

Also, the source of this site's credibility is Harvey's stickies at the top of the Mic forum. 'Nuff said.

Please do, actually - I love absolutely destroying a pretty sound with a good plugin, for creative purposes. :D

And yeah, his stickies were what got me to sign up here in the first place.

Actually I don't do much with VSTis, but I need to get off my duff and finish my compressor. Also want to do a noise reduction VST . . .

Anyway, the main reason why studios accumulate ten zillion microphones is because many studios aren't run like businesses, they are run like hobbies. I've seen people suggest "never sell a microphone", because of the chance, however small, that an otherwise unused microphone might suddenly shine on some particular source. That's great if you have unlimited time and you don't mind having large sums of money tie up in underperforming assets (unless they are vintage mics that are appreciating--but then you are investing, not running a business).

A business would want to optimize process flow, and that would involve selecting a few well-chosen microphones that can be used on most sessions. Sure, Abbey Road needs 400 mics, they might have 50 mics out in various studios on a given day. But does a home studio need 50? Or even 30? Probably most would do well with 10, some can get by with fewer. If you're doing metal drums on a giant kit, maybe 20 just for that though :o

I have a whopping total of six microphones that cover everything, and two of those don't see much use. One LDC, one dynamic, one ribbon, a pair of SDCs (these get the most use as primarily I record instrumentals), and of course my trusty Green Bullet  That's fairly spartan, but double that to a dozen if you need to and get on with it already. Recording <> gear lust.

So how many microphone would you say you own Dr. Bill?

You mean TODAY?? :D:D:D:D

I'd have to check I guess. Just got 6 more mic's from Michael

2 MJE-K47H's (LOVE those)

w/ 2 modded 991 bodies for the above.

A MJ modded fathead (But I already had that so I guess it doesn't add to the total....

And my ABSOLUTE NEW FAVORITE MIC - a Joly modded 1050. It's even better than I suspected it would be. I popped for an expensive NOS GE 5
Star for it from Bowie.

So......um.......probably 60+ or so. :D:D I just gave some away.....

LOL Well OK then. That explains a LOT! :D

:drunk:

I would venture that in my life I had held more microphones in my hands than you have in yours ;)

edit: only 60? The way you talk, I'd have guessed much higher. I owned nearly 40 at my height.

oh geez. Just to show what an old fart I am ...

I remember a time when "moderators" were supposed to quash pissing contests, not start them.

O.K. boys, "No more fighting in the War Room!" ("Dr.Strangelove", or "How I stopped fearing
cheap modded microphones and learned to love them") :)

This keeps up I'm gettin' out the popcorn...

Impressive number DR. Bill! I don't think that I can count all of mine ... well probably in the studio I could.

I have a bunch that are in the shop that go out with numerous live sound support rigs on a rotating schedule.

I did have to pool all of my SM57 a month or so ago and I think that total came to 27 of them plus a half dozen of beta 57s.

I have some of Michaels work and I'm very pleased with what I have.

I'm next in line when you decide to give more microphones away .... or better still we can start an exchange program!
I'll hold a captive microphone for ransom till you come up with a prisoner exchange.

LOL 30+ 57's......WOW! I'm not sure I could figure out what to do with that many. It would fun to try though. :laughings::laughings:

I'd probably start using them for white elephant gifts or for paperweights or something......:drunk:

There are two opinions here, one is your desire for unfettered access to promote your services.

The other was extremely well described by Mr. Roy of MXL on GS:

Microphones are very much a matter of personal choice. It is not my place as a manufacturers representative to use the forums to extol the virtues of our products, that I believe would be contrary to the purpose and spirit of the forums, which I believe to exist to exchange unbiased and helpful advice to interested parties. As I work for MXL any opinions I may have would be understandably be looked upon as skewed towards our own products. I try to limit participation in the forums to answering specific questions, correcting innacuracies, or giving what I consider to be helpful advice from time to time.

Regards

Roy - MXL

I don't think it's a surprise with whom I side.

Also, you keep mentioning moderation, but I have not moderated this thread at all, nor have I even suggested that I would.

On the other hand, your posts on GS have been moderated by their team lately. Do you care to discuss that? What is their conflict of interest in doing so?

I'm sure you have. But I try to put em up on the stand, listen to mine and use them.... :D

I did that with every single one. Well, not all of them end up on a stand, some are just plugged in and held in my hand as I listen, but you get the idea . . .

Did it ever occur to you that I own six microphones because I used to own forty?

Oh, and Mr. Joly, in case you were unaware of this rule at GS:

Can manufacturers, equipment vendors or equipment industry insiders register & post on Gearslutz.com?

Yes.. However they need to be mindful that the site is primarily a gear USERS forum and should NOT post only to promote their products (except in the New Products forum - see below) or to generate sales.
The following behavior is also discouraged by manufacturers, equipment vendors, and equipment industry insiders (post deletion may result if not carefully observed).
1) Posting details of past or ongoing disputes between manufactures, gear vendors or distributors. Please note THE SITE IS NOT TO BE USED FOR WASHING "DIRTY LAUNDRY".
2) Trashing of other manufacturers products or rival dealers product range is unwelcome by dealers & manufacturers. This includes suggestions not to buy, that products are poorly made etc.

How do you reconcile that rule with this post?

http://www.gearslutz.com/board/5772025-post85.html

Glad you see it that way - because my intention was not to disrespect but rather to probe. And besides, Gearsultz members enjoy hearing from manufacturers who are willing to "lift the hood (bonnet)", drop the marketing protocol and speak honestly.

I appreciate the delicacy of Roy's position at MXL. I've held similar marketing positions at large corporations. But I was hoping to get a more candid response. I mean, to paraphrase - "the 2003 was great when it was introduced and now its even greater" (despite the fact it sounds completely different)? Where's the reality here?

MXL has a very successful business model with multiple channel distribution and exclusive models to protect individual retailers. And I applaud Roy for his marketing prowess and success. But lets differentiate between marketing prowess (which MXL has) and a singular engineering vision based on a belief in a core "sound" (which they have not demonstrated).

Enquiring minds want to know . . .

That's not counting the 4 that I have that stopped working!!!

Let me know when you want to start the prisoner exchange. ;)

Why do you start a pissing match with this guy every time he posts here? Get over yourself already.

Enquiring minds want to know? Rational minds want you to let it go...

I didn't start this one. I wasn't even talking to him. He thinks it's all about "moderation" when there is *zero* moderation on this thread. I said something nice about the MXL, and he dissed me. He attacks me on GS and I don't even participate there. It gets very tiring.

He has it within his ability to stop his behavior . . .
