I think my only point is that whole MACs are
better for audio than a PC thing is soooo ten years ago.At least the whole Protools thing has died down.
I totally agree, mate.
My brother in law has a PC and is a far, far better musician than I'll ever be. He's waiting until he can buy a Mac before getting into the whole home recording thing. I said "You've got a PC, I can direct you to some free/cheap software so you can play around a bit and for the price of a used pro-sound card and some extra RAM, you could be up and running in a few days..." But no, he insists on getting a Mac before he even strikes a note. He's heard of Garageband and this, to him, is where it's at.
Now I can't go off on a rant because I'm hardly technically qualified enough to tell him how to spend his hard earned but to my reasoning, I don't feel splashing out on a Mac is really necessary when you're already used to the PC.
Yes, if he takes it seriously, he'll probably need to start fresh with a new PC. Something a bit quieter and more powerful, etc... Maybe getting the Mac is the fresh start he needs though? I mean, he could probably pick up a used G4...
I mean, they are lovely little things... don't get me wrong.
Thing is though, I'm now using the interface and hard drive I intend to put into the the next machine I build, and this time, instead of standard processor, it will be dual core. Even with this ramshackle kit, I'm still making music, so there's no gap in my groove. A few upgrades later and I'll have myself a dedicated dual core music station, with no added learning curve.
I just really enjoy the possibilities with the PC. If I suddenly changed to a Mac, it would seem the upgrade curve would be chopped off short and the Mac would be a sealed off, exclusive little world, from my main technology.
I mean... I
have thought about this... I've actually gone as far as looking at the Macs on Ebay... but still, it just doesn't make enough sense. At least, not financially! And the question of "
For the money is it gonna make better music though"... well... Heh! I think we know the answer to that...
