More specifics:
The midi interface can be switched between USB and MidiThru.
With USB: Records and plays back music but no sound is heard when playing keyboard.
With Midi Thru: Does not record or playback; Keyboard sounds when played.

Hoping that helps a bit...see below for my initial query.

I am new here and I don't know if anyone can answer a question about the above application, which I know is a dinosaur. Sorry.

I used it years ago very successfully w/o fully undestanding MIDI, and here is my problem. It plays back pre-existing midi files OK, but it is not recording them. I am using:
Yamaha KX88 keyboard controller
Roland JV880 sound module
MidiSport interface

Assume that all wiring is correct. Why no input/recording? When I attempt to record audio a visual "bar" appears but there is nothing in it. I tried that as a test - I am trying to record midi, not audio. So when I try recording midi, no visual "bar" appears. This is my midi setup:
Inputs: JV880, Cubase, MidiSport. There are some other parameters but I'll wait for a response before I elaborate. Many thanks to anyone who can help me.

In the Devices menu, under Device Setup, when you click on MIDI Port Setup do you have the inputs activated?

We should start a wagering system on this sort of shit.

I'm gonna go with $5 that's it. :)

Dintymoore: I was going to give a very similar answer (the device manager part) but in all honesty, the older Cubase VSTs are an absolute nightmare sometimes. You can be cruising along quite nicely then wham!
For some unknown reason, the DAW has decided to playback via "5&6 analog outs".
When this happens now, I just switch my speaker cables over to 5&6 or 3&4 or whatever the heck Cubase has deemed it to be.
Cubase VST 32.5 has been programmed to make me feel stupid.

My bad - I was thinking Cubase 5. They really did a number naming their versions like they did.

In Cubase VST/24 4.0, which is likely the same in Cubase VST 5.0, to check to see if the inputs are turned on:

1. go to the Options menu up top
2. select "MIDI Systems" and then "System"
3. in the "MIDI Systems" dialog box, under "Input From", select "Inputs"

it should look like this and that's where you turn on or off inputs:

I only have my MK-461C keyboard selected.

Just how many Cubases do you have? :D

One for every room!

I started on Cubase 3.0 in '89 on Atari. Then I went to Mac VST/24 4.1r2 in 1999 and this year bought SX3 with an upgrade to Cubase 4.

I am still much better in OS 9 on VST 24, and I'm still using it to sequence MIDI tracks 'cause I'm faster in it.

And Wavelabs? :drunk:

I've never used Wavelab.

I have a system based on when I had a reel to reel.

I have all my tracks play back through a mixer and that goes to two tracks back on my computer, and in that process I go through a T.C.Electronics Finalizer that I use mainly for multi band compression.

My guess is I use my Finalizer to do the tweaking that some people would use Wavelab for. But that's just a guess. Maybe I need one, or two, or...
