It's a high-end compressor, probably found in most studios. It sounds pretty damn good. Works great on bass.

The Distressor gets its name from its feature of incorporating harmonic DISTortion with a classic knee compRESSOR. For instance, the Distortion 2 setting introduces a 2nd order harmonic, which adds tube-like analog warmth to the signal.

I'm not interested in an outboard unit, no. I can't remember where I saw one last night but I wanted to know what it was... Yes it was a rack mount unit but I thought that there would have to be a vst?

for some reason there isnt...a couple of vst compressors have it as a preset but I cant even imagine that its close to the real thing..

Well I suppose the question is has Dave Derr licensed any? And can the Distressor really be reduced to mere compression + second-order harmonic distortion?
If the question is are there VST compressors that incorporate even-order distortion, of course. And Derr did license Fatso to UA, you could try that out . . .
