Oc-703 vs The cotton candy stuff?

Hi all. So I am about to start building some bass traps and I just had a quick question. Which is better for absorbing lower frequencies, Oc 703 rigid, or the pink fluffy stuff you put in walls. I ask this because I have about 30 sqft of the pink stuff in my garage, and I dont want to have to go out and buy a bunch of unnecessary stuff.

Rigid. But if you still have that stuff in rolls, it'll work perfectly.

Definitely rigid. Actually save some money and get mineral wool like roxul rockboard 60. It's more effective than standard 703 at lower frequencies. Essentially a 2" thick sheet of this stuff is like 16" of standard insulation compressed down into a "rigid" sheet. That's what makes it dense and acoustically effective.

Yeah, rigid would be ideal but like PandaDude says...if it's still rolled up, stand it in the corners and they'll work fine.

I just recently made some super chunks for the corners of my room and it was fairly easy (just time consuming) and not too hard on the wallet. I think for the rockboard 60 (which does take care of slightly lower frequencies than 703), the material to cover em and the trim came to a total of about $350, including the shipping which was $130 of it. That was for 4, 8 ft tall corner traps that are 24" across and fill the corner.

Just some food for thought man.

All the above is true, except if you're building a THICK back wall with lots of airspace. When I say thick, I really mean anything from 2'-3' thick plus 4'-6' of airspace behind it. If you're doing that, then the fluffy stuff (slightly compacted) is the better way to go.

Yeah I have a few of those in strategic locations my basement.... My basement is full of water heater/softener, paint, power tools, and boards and shit.. So it doesn't look out of place Plus I stuffed the joists in the ceiling with it, a foot deep, then covered it all with a drop ceiling. It's ghetto but it's decent. Helluva lot better than before.

Can't really say dude. I read that rockboard got down a bit lower than OC and figgered, what the hell. That, and it was cheaper.

If ya can't find it local, be prepared for a fairly hefty freight bill. Oversized packages and all that. Ya might wanna figure in $25 to $40 extra per box for your budget.

If you can get it local, just ask whoever it is (Home Depot, Lowe's etc) to bring some in on their next stock order. No freight but you'll have to wait on their time frame.

No go with the Roxul. I have tons of both and I like the roxul better. It also doesn't irritate your skin...as much

I think the real deal behind the OC vs. Roxul vs. Pink fluffy is the density, thickness and porousness. Air has to be able to move between the fibers and meet just the right amount of restriction to slow the speed of the air down. From what I've read here at HR, 3 to 6 punds per cubic foot is the right density, which is OC703, Johns Manville rigid board, Roxul, etc. For the pink fluffy, if you compress it enough and make it thick enough, you should get the same results.

The one difference is the kraft paper on the pink fluffy; that will add another variable to the equation. If it's the first layer to see the sound waves, it will reflect higher freq's.

30 sq ft doesn't sound like a whole lot of pink fluffy, though.
