i have a room thats 8ft by 12 ft long and 12ft high...not the best but keep with me here...now to record my drums would it be best to have them facing down the room or facing sideways?
You may have an even easier time if you hand the drum to somebody else and have them walk around the room banging while you walk around the room listening. You will get a better picture of the sound a room microphone picks up.Only you can make that judgment based on how it sounds. Spend a few minutes with a single tom. Walk around the room while hitting it and listening for the sound to change. (You don't need to record it yet, just use your ears.)
At some spots in the room it will seem to "come to life" more so than other spots. If you like the way it sounds in any of those sweet spots then that is where you should set up. The direction you face should be decided the same way.
I'd set the kit up both ways, record fifteen minutes in each configuration with all the mics/ mic set ups you're likely to be using, have a good critical listen, then............
Then?.....Then?

Best way to place drums is in front of the drum stool.
Sorry. Coudn't resist.
I would kill myslef before moving my kit around!![]()
Maybe for a small 5 piece and a couple of mics...
In a small room like that, I just don't think room ambience is something that will be all that great, as the sound of the kit in that room will be very "compressed".
A couple of spot mics, and maybe some OH mics....that's it.
If the room is very lively...it will sound a cluster-fuck with a lot of mics.
I marked my calendar, bloodshit.![]()
But if I'm right about this now...then that means I've also been right about everything else up to now, because this encompasses my overall recording mantra.
You just never wanted to admit it until now.![]()
There ya go being dumb and wrong again. I knew it wouldn't last.![]()
