Scrubber tool sound in Pro Tools

I'm trying to figure out how to make the sound that i make with the scrubber tool when i move it slowly then speed up over a track. It sounds like a quick faded/phased sound. I'm not too sure how else to describe it.

It's simply playing back the audio at varying speeds, starting from slow to fast, very similar to putting your finger on a vinyl and slowing it down and speeding it up. If you're using Pro Tools 7.4 or later, you can use the "Varispeed" elastic audio plug-in to make adjustments to your track at different points to get it to play back at different speeds, although it will probably take you a while to emulate the sound of using the scrubber tool manually, probably with a lot of chopping up/crossfades/tiny adjustments. Sounds like a pain.

There's also a plug-in that has a similar effect to this, I think it's called Vari-Fi. Check that out.

Ah! I just thought of (probably) the best way. Set your audio track to tick-based (not sample-based, like most audio tracks). This will enable elastic audio (i think, if not, just do it yourself - make sure it's "varispeed") on your track, and then use your tempo-operations window (under the "event" menu) to draw in a tempo curve, going from low tempo to high tempo. Doing this will stretch your audio track to meet the new tempo, and if using varispeed, adjust the pitch too, to get the effect you're looking for. This might take a lot of playing around with though.

Definitely FOC with Pro Tools 8.

If you're using Pro Tools 8, make an edit selection, then go to the Audio Suite Menu, then look for Vari-Fi. The rest should be self explanatory.
