Hi

I want to record a synth sound into cubase, then route it out to a hardware fx pedal, then record it back into cubase with the effect added on a second track.

Is this possible? If so how can i do it - anybody know?

Cheers!

Pete

Yea, it's possible. Without knowing what your hardware is, the general procedure would be like this:

In Cubase: Just set the output of the original channel to one of your interface's outputs (let's say... output 3, assuming that 1 and 2 are the main outs for your monitors), and the input of another channel to one of your interface's inputs (say... input 1). You may have to set up an output bus for output 3 if you don't have one setup using that output already.

Then run a cable from output 3 to the input on the fx unit, and another cable from the fx unit's output to input 1 on your interface. Record. :D

master/slave

Great Mr hippo, thanks for that info, it worked perfectly through the motu.

Having another problem though.

I want to add the effect and record it in real time as a wav underneath the original track. The trouble is that if i record it i can still hear the master and the slave together. If i mute the master then cubase cant hear what needs to be recorded. How can i mute the master so only the slave is heard, while still being able to record the sound?

No problem - that's what we're all here for :D

Ok, say you have a track called "raw audio in from a synth", and another track called "synth through fx unit".

What you want to do is make sure that your "raw audio in from a synth" track is using the secondary output bus (the one setup for output 3 in the first hypothetical situation before) - then it simply won't play in the main mix, even when it's not muted - it's routed out a different port. Click the monitor button on that track ("raw audio in from a synth"), and that will re-route the signal out that output bus as it's played in real time. Now record on both "raw audio in from a synth", and "synth through fx unit", and you will record both the unprocessed signal, and the processed signal simultaneously.

This is tricky to explain exactly - if you don't get what I'm saying, I'll make you a screenshot later.

Thanks again, but i think i need a screenshot if you can do one? Not too sure what you mean by secondary bus.....

Sure - here you go - with this setup if I run a synth into Mono In 1, then run a cable from Out 3 to an FX unit, and a cable from FX unit's output to Mono In 2, then click monitor on the first track, and record on both - it will do what you want:

After recording, of course, just set the output bus of the first track back to the main mix (or wherever you want it to go).
