Fans of vintage Tascam, this is fun...

Neat Cory, there was a Model 70 going here on eBay a month ago. Trying for a grand for it but no bids and it soon dropped to seven to eight hundred. Someone picked it up.

Nice. Yeah a little over priced but cool to look at.

I picked up a Urei notch filter I won on ebay and the seller had a bunch of nice vintage decks including an MCI 1" 8 track he was working on. Seeing that made my day.

Overpriced IMHO but really fun to see the complete array...the series 70 and Model 10 were Tascam's first products of that nature. They had issues, but it is still cool to see those all together like that.

I'll bet you didn't know that before the Model 10 debuted, JBL was planning to market a recording console of a similar nature. 2 prototypes were built but the projected manufacturing costs kept on going up. The emergence of the Model 10 @ roughly 1/2 the list price of the JBL board, was the final nail in the project's coffin.

BTW - if you think it's getting tough to find parts for the Tascam 80-8 and newer multitrack machines, just wait till you try to find anything for the series 70 units. If anything that isn't generic breaks, you are probably totally on your own.

Overpriced IMHO....

That's an understatement...

It looks pretty clean and well kept...but unless you were a TOTAL old-TASCAM-gear fanatic...I doubt anyone else would touch that stuff at that price.

For $6k you could probaly buy a Trident 65 console and a 24-track Otari deck that would smoke that old TASCAM stuff.

I guess if the machine has some really interesting history it could see a price like that... There was actually one of these selling on eBay close to where i live for i think $1000AUD a few weeks ago... advertised as working? Personally I would never buy a recorder that old. However, I didn't think it was as rare as you guys make it out to be.

I notice that one of the reels of tape says "James Gang" on it. Considering that they were originally from Ohio, where this equipment is, that could be for real, er, reel. Prince did much of his early demo material on a Series 70 system much like that. That work resulted in his getting the contract with Warner Brothers Records. I could only dream of owning such equipment at the time (and sell it to others who could own it).

That's right up the street from me! I'll go check it out. Price is WAY too high though.

Some people are just TOTALLY unrealistic about prices when they sell.

Right now there's an Otari 2" 24-track, (a 90 I think)...and it looks pretty clean, but he has a $6500 BIN price…!!!...and yet says he's the second owner, that the heads have seem some use, and that the rollers are in need of repair...etc. :p

I have NO idea how he's coming up with $6500...???...when just about every other Otari 70/80/90 is in the $2k-$3k range (that I've seen in recent months on eBay).

I guess it has to do with their personal investment into the gear, and the fact that some people seem to think everything old/discontinued...should just have a high price on it! :D

talldog---did you check the 70 out?

Im curious if you checked out the 70 setup.... Its my neck of the woods as well and was thinking of checking it out....His price is way out of my league for what hes selling,...took a great picture and with the whole setup together, it definetly looks beautiful...

thanks,

clevo

Just remember on pricing.............
If, and i mean a big if............
if the machine is all maintanenced and ready to go...........
the more expensive machine(if within reason of course) is usually
way more affordable in the long run, then the dirt cheap abused special.
I paid a bit more than the going rate for my 80-8 but it was maintanenced,
had several spare parts, manuals and it's from someone i trust.

The thing here though is that the 70 series were not known for reliability...or performance, and you can totally forget about parts availability.

Your point is a good one which is why I always read of folks like Beck and cjacek preaching that make/model is less important than condition, but I'm not sure it would be a good idea to apply that to the 70 series unless (as mentioned above) you are a collector.

I'm going to attach some of the pics to this thread so that they're there long after the auction is over and done...

my idea with this set-up

this is close to home...i am thinking of this set-up as the first thing a musician sees when he comes in to my studio...off site out of the basement and opening up a studio....

my market niche is fellow analog enthusiasts who enjoy their recordings done with this as set-up such as this...

being local and already knowing all of he bands and some of the musicians who have recorded on this unit gives me a good customer base by virtue of the unit itself...face it, many of us hate all of the digital stuff and computers and would rather hang out in a retro atmosphere which i would create...kind of like getting to sleep with your high school sweetheart with no strings attached for a few days..

i know my idea and business plan is a good one, but my question is what is this worth? I know it has to operate perfectly and I will need a reliable tech as well as someone who can make parts for whatever fails..

what would you offer if you were in my situation...remember I have great advantages by being from Cleveland and knowing a shitload of musicians already drooling to record in the hangout I would create...

but I am looking at his as a once in a blue moon opportunity for a set up like this... I already own a good 2 track mix down deck, and enough decent gear to get going...

thanks all,

clevo

p.s. Dr.Zee.... I hear ya...great point..great website and beautiful stuff..

As far as using smething like this to create a vibe and attract clients;

i think more important would be to have a pool table, well stocked fridge,
a space invaders or pac man unit, a washing machine, and someone to tune your instrument for you.

I agree with Zee. But I would say 2K max. But even at 2k I wouldn't when I can get something like a Trident mixer and MCI or Ampex 8 track for about that price.

But it does look nice And maybe they sound better than I would know too.
