rock mix - need assistance please

Sounds good dylan - the snare's too loud, maybe a tad more bass but it's a catchy pop-rok tune. Vocals are excellent....

Vocals are a bit low in the mix.... and thin.. They need to be beefed up... Maybe a chorus effect? Or doubling them up? The song's vocal / drum / bass verses really need something else. I'm hearing a rhythm chug-chug-chug guitar in the back there to help beef things up...

Drums could also be a bit tighter. Something weird is going on with the overheads... The hi-hat is brighter than the cymbals... Not too bad, but something I don't hear much...

The solo part of the guitar is nice, but still missing some padding of some sort in the mix... Like rhythm guitar / some synth-pad or something...

Vocals are well done!

The click on the kick drum is also bugging me for some reason.. It sound like an ultra-metal kick sound which is never hit in the machine-gun fashion.. Maybe lower the click, and beef up the bass-kick portion...

Great idea for a song, though! Had a good time listening to it, for sure...

That's a midi bass line, isn't it? A really bass would fill the sound out a lot more, and fill up the low end more that is missing because of the kick not being very full. I think with a real bass in there, the kick would actually sound a bit less clicky. I like the guitar sounds a lot. Adding a rhythm guitar chug in the 2nd halves of the verses would give thing more energy, and definitely you should throw a rhythm guitar under the solo.
 
+1 for wanting to hear a rhythm guitar added.

Your guitar sounds good, but when it cuts out, the song just sounds empty.

The energy level in this song sounds a little low. It's probably the vocalist and the drums. Your vocalist doesn't sound very enthusiastic, which drags everything down a bit. And your drummer could stand to add some fills to bring the energy up.

Overall, it's a good song, it just needs a rhythm guitar and a little more "oomph."
 
Seriously? That sounds exactly like a midi bass tone I used to use on demos. There is this really present treble click on it that sounds artificial. You should probably cut out some of the high-mid on it, or re-record the bass with some more isolation on the miked cab (so the pick sound isn't getting picked up on the track).
 
On the plus side the mix is ok, aka i can hear everything fine. I agree with whats been said about bass. The song does nothing for me, guitars kinda just drone away, drums bash away, worst offender is the singer though, no passion, sounds like he's singing in the wrong key tbh. I think the lack of energy in the chorus is what dooms it for me. As i said the mix is decent enough though
 
I think this is a very strong song. I like the sparseness of the verse giving the voice room.

I'm guessing you are trying to keep it "honest" to the band/live performance by not doubling up on the guitar or adding keys, which is cool (and admirable).

However there is a big drop in sound when you go to solo and you are trying to use a slightly busier bass to fill the song out in the absence of chords and this is not working.

There are some "tricks" for avoiding this classic 4 piece band problem including using an effect on the solo to fill the song out (like U2 using delay), playing a 2 string solo (like U2) or, what might work with this song, putting in a breakdown before the solo with sparser drums, bass and guitar so that the solo is a lift again (eh, yes that would be U2 again!).

If you don't want to rerecord, try fattening the bass sound to give it a wider frequency range or even adding some distortion to the bass.

Finally I have to agree with the kick comments and its not helping fill out the song.

With a looping pedal, you could double up the guitars on the solo live.
 
The problem with this mix is that it lacks everything. It's a cool song, but it has no power whatsoever. For starters, get more guitars in there. Fill the sound with the barrage of guitars. At least double the rhythms and have a lead track. The kick is terrible. It's all click and midrange. No meat behind it. The snare sounds okay, but the overheads are funny. Are there any overheads? The lack of toms and weak cymbals make it seem like the drums were recorded with the snare mic catching bleed from everywhere else. The bass would probably seem fine with more guitars in there. The vocals are pretty terrible. No emotion whatsoever. You sound bored. Belt that shit out.

I did read further and i agree with what you said. I just enjoyed "lacks everything".
 
I think I should stop reading other people's posts while I'm waiting for the songs to download. I was expecting a total disaster, but I think it's only the uninvolved vocals that drag the song down somewhat, everything else is passable and has reasonable energy. I particularly liked the guitar tone, just right for the song and kind of spunky, and you play it rather well, too. I think the idea of having a delay or a looping pedal is a good one, an effect like that could bring a lot to your sound, but if you go down this route, I think your main objective would be to make it as inconspicuous as possible because you don't want them to get in the way of the immediacy that you have displayed in this song. As for the drums, I usually don't mind a clicky kick, but here it just doesn't fit, and your drummer kind of forgets to play his cymbals a couple of times, which does nothing but disrupt the flow of the song.
