i'm an extreme newbie and have no idea what a "mid-band sweep" is. I come across this term a lot, however, i'm not sure when or where it applies. basically i was reading a thread online and it talked about "sweep mid band, jacking the Q"...:S so what is it exactly lol?

P.S. i use cubase sx2 so if you guys can use that as an example...that'd be perfect:)

On a mixer (or plug ins) in the mid band EQ you'll have a knob to select a frequency in the mid range then a knob to add or subtract that frequency.

thanks alot! however, i don't have a mixer or plugins installed...can i use a feature in cubase to do this...? if so, how?

Yo GurpyDude :D

Don't use Cubase so no examples but basically what they're talkin about is in your equalization.

They're talkin about sweeping the mids which is just your midrange EQ. It has to do with (maybe in Cubase) high lighting a frequency of the EQ, dropping (or raising) that freq by a decibel or two and sweeping it to the left and right to find a sweet spot.

You'll also hear about Low cuts (similar to hi pass) where you cut the lowest frequencies completely out of the track. Hi pass being where you let the High's Pass but not the lows.

Hope it helps mang...;)

I think this begs the question....if you have no clue what it does or what its purpose is for, why do you want the feature so much?

(granted its actually a very basic technique/feature available in virtually every DAW in existence, but still, the point stands)

Curiosity my dear Watson, curiosity.....

I guess that when one is new and trying to develop and improve one's recording and mixing, in the course of research, one comes across all these terms and phrases {Compression, room sound, gating, fix in the mix, ADT, pop shield, variable sweep, parametric EQ, toslink, aftertouch, unbalanced, dithering, phase, damping, ground loop, waveform, etc, etc, etc } that make you wonder, especially if they seem to crop up again and again. Their regularity give the impression that this is something common/ordinary, and that everyone should know about it. Ergo, one then starts to wonder, "what it's all about" and what kind of, if any, difference these things might make.

Heck, I feel a song coming on.......:laughings:

I'm reminded of a line from the song 'Coming in from the cold' by Bob Marley;

"Well, the biggest man you ever did see was once a baby...."

In other words, we all have to start somewhere. And slowly but surely move on to somewhere.
