recording through your soundcard?

get a decent audio interface. any should provide that ability, as it's pretty standard to need to be able to do that.

anywhere from $100 to ALOT more, but i'm guessing you don't need something in the higher end.

read some posts on here, alot of people come here asking the same questions you are and there is a ton of information for people just starting out. the search option is your friend, for sure. every question you can think to ask has already been asked.

also do you know any nice quality large diaphragm condenser mics/packages within the range of 300 to 500 bucks?

You can do a lot more to help yourself by searching and/or browsing through the forums. All your questions have been answered many times.

Thanks and welcome to the site.

go to the microphones forum. tons of info on mic's and price ranges and which ones are best suited.

research, research, research. this can get to be an expensive hobby, spend your money how YOU want to.

like i said, that question has been asked a hundred time before. search button. =)

And, pretty much any recording software allows options for monitoring.

Welcome to the site!! every prgram allows you to monitor. Remember not to spill beer on the diaphragm of the mic, very bad idea!

i've used an MXL 990 mic for vox. its only around 100 bucks and for what you get from it its great value.

for that price range you could get a blue baby bottle, or an MXL V69

If your brand new try out M-audio's fast track usb. Its packaged with M-audio's session software and it will allow you to hear yourself.....realtime.....through your headphones. OR you can try out M-Audio producer.....its also packaged with the session sotware. All it is a condensor usb mic with a headphones input built into the mic. I have both of these and your can't really beat it if your just starting out. Plus it like 99 bucks for everything brand new. I think you can get this package for around bucks on ebay.

Check this one out

AT 2020

Cheerz!

If you're looking for a good all-around mic, that would be a good choice. Particularly for use as an instrument mic, a 2020 is a decent piece of hardware. It also makes a good room mic for various purposes. For close-up vocals, I find it to be a bit on the edgy side—not harsh, but not particularly flattering.

BTW, the AT2020 is not a large diaphragm—it's only about 2/3rds of an inch (16mm). It's medium at best, and some would call it small.

If you're mainly looking for a solid vocal mic, I'd probably steer you towards a CAD M179 or similar (or if you can afford it, an M9, which is the same capsule with a two-stage tube/op amp circuit instead of just FETs).
