There's a store on ebay that sells foam direct from the manufacturer, with practically identical specs to Auralex foam for very cheap. I dropped about $120 and was able to do my entire room, including bass traps. If you search for foam on there, I'm sure it'll come up... it wasn't hard to find when I bought from them.

mmmmm. ebay.

Careful. The reason the specs look the same is because (at least in the case of Foambymail.com) the specs ARE exactly the same, ripped straight off Auralex's website. Second-tier foam vendors are not all created equal. Caveat emptor and all that.

Some folks will tell you that egg crate foam that is used for mattresses will work well for this. DON'T USE IT! This type of foam breaks down quickly, creates dust and small particles of foam that will get into your keyboard, computer, and listening area. It's also not fire safe should you be a commercial room and will invalidate your insurance. Use quality foam or treatment materials from a qualified manufacturer. It costs less than you'd think. And it's available in many colors. Visit Auralex University for more information on how best to suit your mix environment.

Yeah I guess the more research I do foam helps mostly with highs and spot treatment for ringing areas. Im going to use Auralex because the stupid deal of the day on musiciansfriend. But I needed some for my computer cabinet too so it works out well for me.

Ive actually used a "booth" at a friends home setup where he had egg crate mattress foam wrapped around and it helped some. I should post the recordings. He had his booth under his basement stairs though with brick and wood so it helped some. better than brick and wood stairs with an open back. I think the mics are the thing that made a decent recording though. Blue Bluebird Large Diaphragm Cardioid Condenser and a Rode NTK with a Focusrite Platinum VoiceMaster Pro Processor.
