Eggshell foam for beds, put it on the wall instead?

Hey man, I was seriously considering it. Cutting that mess up and using it instead of paying 300 dollars for the real thing.

Might as well try and see, it's more out of curiosity.
 
Before you do that you should check out AMFoam.com where you can order a peice of real studio foam 100"x80" for only 40.00, just go there and email the contact guy and ask about corrugated foam. Its fire retardent and has more mass than bed foam.

Egg cartons do ABSOLUTELY NOTHING...

I wonder where this piece of mythology even came from -regarding egg cartons being useful in sound treatment... is it just because of the shape and someone equated it to Sonex foam???

No...Yes...maybe... Its original usage came from way back before Sonex and Auralex were companies. Its useful in breaking up flatwalls, does this thing to sound waves called diffraction. But in the olden days, it was always a temporary solution to fix spot problems... Its also used for packaging materials. The amount of diffraction of the stuff used for bedding is pretty small, the peak to trough depth is too small, and the angularity of the peaks are to small. The density of the bedding foam is usually pretty low so its not good for absorbing most musical situations. It is fire rated better than card board egg cartons because its used in bedding, but thats about it.
If your in a pinch moneywise..carpet is better, also sleeping bags are good for temporary treatments...but don't expect too much out of cheap "treatments". Ive used down comforters in a pinch, coats on hangers even...

But...I suggest getting the real thing when your able to, a stick will work as a crutch...but not if your going to need it for more than a 100 yards...

YES!.. Egg carton shaped foam will work fine in a pinch.... I wouldn't exactly design a studio with the intentions of installing it, but If you want a good cheap way to cut down on reflections and room noise, untill you get the $$ for the real stuff, it will work..

I kinda figured egg shell bed foam wasn't dense enough...other wise it wouldn't be as nice to sleep on.

I suppose I will experiment with that and carpet anyway. Coat rack, etc.

Ill Email them there at AMFoam. Iknow that they will deliver, but I live there and I buy it from the place every once in a while.

How close Are you to KC,MO. Maybe you can pick some up. 80.00 for 2 sheets of 100x80 studio foam. I outfitted my studio with it covering every surface.
 
My mistake here is the fact that the minimum order there is 50.00 so they may deal with you on two pieces for 80.00. Still a great Value.

ok I've considered to use my closet to do my vocals because its huge but the problem is the echo and all that crap its not isolated what should i put on the walls and i dont have tons of money i was looking into rigid insulation and the eggshell foam i have an excellent condenser mic and an se reflection filter which help amazing but i just want it to be a little more isolate what does anyone suggest i do to the walls for treatment i was even looking and that matress pad stuff any suggestions?

Isolated? Are you refering to "soundproofing"? Isolation and acoustic treatment are two completely seperate subjects. Acoustic treatment such as foams will do NOTHING for isolation.

ya i meant treat it i ended up using foam and the results are awesome i know this ain't no pro sound but its dry and that's what i wanted i ain't picking up my cats footsteps or all that unexpected natural echo Reverb and noise i record late at night when its really still out so no traffic sounds because i live in a busy part of Toronto so i used some foam i got from a friend who sells music stuff and its awesome so i created a lil spot for the mic and got me an se reflection filter and what a difference the mix is dry and with a little mastering and mix down with some effects the vocals and instruments i use sound way better my advice to anyone else doing this kind of thing would be there is no harm in trying if you don't have tons of money use what you have stay inspired don't over think things and listen to what people have to say but be creative :) most people just feed u a bunch of bs anyway you'll never know how unless you take chances peace.

Here in Detroit you can get a box of Owens Corning 703 2" thick, 12 sheets 2' X 4' for about $90. Wrap it in fabric, place it off the wall 2" and it will be eons more effective than any foam. Thats for reflections. If you are trying to control the low end that is another thing entirely.

yeah, I noticed that :D. So at least the new guy used the search feature (or he read every thread here all the way back to 2002 (and still somehow thought foam was a good idea))
