I have never recorded anything on the computer before so I am completely lost and would greatly appreciate some advice.

I want to record music as a hobby. I'm not looking to do anything special. It doesnt have to have professional quality. I would like to record acoustic guitar, vocals, and occasionally bass guitar.

1. What software should I look into? I don't want to get anything too expensive, and I would like to get something that is easy for a beginner to use

2. microphone?

3. Is there anything else I may need?

Thanks!

I've been using Audacity. It's free. I like it.

Audacity is a good place to start, it's easy to use and gets you going into recording fast. Works well with almost any pc or laptop and yes, it's free. You will need a better mic than a little computer mic, maybe even a preamp to get a decent sound. There is quite a bit to learn, just don't rush it. Take your time and enjoy the experience. Oh yeah, welcome to the wacky world of home recording. If you are not already crazy, recording will make you that way. I'm just kidding about being crazy but recording can get frusterating at times.
