really...just like stealing a car?

..that's preposterous

much of pirated software is used by curious kids..is that like stealing a car in a showroom?

much of pirated software is used by people who go on to buy legitimate software when they do take it seriously..is that like stealing a car in a showroom?

downloading a couple of hundred dollars program that you probably wouldn't buy in the first place is like stealing a 20k car from a showroom?

The car showroom analogy was used by someone else, and I continued. Of course $20k is not the same as $200, but the action is the same . . . taking something that you have no right to.

And as for "much of pirated software is used by curious kids". That makes it alright, does it? I can't imagine in what circumstances curiosity would be a valid defence for theft:

"Sorry, your honour, I was curious to see what the book was like before I bought it, so I stole it to have a read."
"Well, that's alright, son. I see your curiosity got the better of you. Not guilty. Next!"

And even more 'preposterous' is the idea that "I would never buy it anyway, which means it's okay to steal it." That's what joyriders do.

So your saying that you NEVER download songs or Cd's to your computer (or anything else) that you didn't buy?

Why do you think you need to make this assumption? Because you do something, do you think that means everyone else does? Or are you seeking justification for bad behaviour? Or are you trying to dilute the strength of ssscientist's words by implying hypocricy?

In short, if he has done any of the things I've listed he is as much of a thief as one who uses pirated software. Not saying, merely asking. If you looked at my post my exact words were, So your saying that you NEVER download songs or Cd's to your computer? I forgot to add the question mark at the end of the sentence if that's what threw you. Why would you infer that I was talking to everyone else?

Don't get me wrong, I'm not questioning your logic. Sure, if ssscientist has downloaded stuff inappropriately, then, yes, he is as much a thief as those he condemns.

But what I don't get is why you needed to make that statement in the first place, hence my questions. There was a thought process going on in your head about this issue that I wasn't able to work out.

He didn't assume you were talking to everyone else. He knew you were talking to ssscientist and even said so. gz was using the "editorial" everyone--if you've done it you assume he has--which is the same as assuming everyone has, isn't it?

In any case, it's a bad assumption on your part. You don't know that he has, and I can certainly tell you that not everyone has.

Oh OK! I misunderstood your post. Bottom line is, I've noticed the thread and his caught my eye and I commented on it. I think he said he was tired of this shit or something like that and I had to laugh. As I think I admitted a in my original post, I've done it before (cracked software) and it was wrong when I did it too. Hope were cool now.

ha ha you are really going to run with this?

you're all over the place..its from reading books to joyriding..

let me try a few

murder is murder..people that kill cows should be tried for murder..after all they are all lives..we're all mammals..

using your neighbours wifi..why that's just the same as robbing a bank..its all theft.."your honour I was just trying out the internet"

playing your version of Lucy and the Sky with Diamonds to your friends..do you have a licence for public broadcast...thats the theft of beatles music..send him down

or maybe you can check your local coffee shop and ensure they have the required licenses foe playing the radio, if not you tell 'em...hell some here even admit to watching the odd chinese pirated video..damn the downfall of hollywood..they are funding traid drug gangs! call the cops!!

see I can do it too...stealing a car from a showroom, stealing a car to joyride...are not the same...reading a book or a magazine in a retail store before you decide to buy it possibly is..you dont get arrested for that..they dont ask you to leave Borders for having a nosey through do they?

are the folks that use more than the allowed amount of copies of software on several PCs just as guilty of theft or can you actuially see that there are different levels?

and I saw no ad hominem attacks? ;)

well I dont use pirated software..I dont have to and I wont illegally download while Im in countries where my visa is required to be renewed annually..but if I was at home I wouldn't have much of an issue with it, I have used pirated copies of Office (and legitimate), I have downloaded movies and mp3s when at home...tell you what Ive broke quite a few laws in my time...neither proud of that or not...havent stole a car yet but I do realise downloading illegally is just a gateway drug to owning a chop shop

???

Take a deep breath, an aspirin and have a lie down. You'll feel better for it in the morning.

is that a yes or a no? i'm going to go ahead and assume it's a yes. and spare me the "ass out of you and me" thing. i know you have and he knows you have.

Does this follow and does it pertain?

You're lead on by somebody to believe that the two of you will do something, agree to pursue something, make arrangements to continue a path... and that person does not follow through. On a regular basis, even. So you feel betrayed, your trust stolen, your confidence in the relationship damaged. (Even similar to the wife who feels you committed adultery because you lusted after her girlfriend).

Now, that person who stole your confidence, betrayed your trust of friendship, lusted after another...refuses to be a party to your using pirated software because he thinks he is making a right stand against it/you.

Apparently, he does not realize that he has done the same thing in other areas of his life.

Yea or Nay?

its the morning I feel fine...stealing a car is in no way equivalent to the use of cracked software

comeback of the century, give your script writers a 10% raise and take the rest of the day off! :)

for a crime to take place there must be a victim. In the case of software the victim is a software developer that has lost money because somebody who would have paid him that money decided to use pirate software.

Problem is that it all gets a little screwed up when there was no money ..it was never there ..the guy that uses the pirate software would never use it unless it was free and he isnt earning from it.

No money missing... no crime ...just some guys who got a kick out of screwing around with stuff that they would normally not have a cat in hells chance of affording anyway.

That is certainly a lame assumption and not one to validate theft. If you run a red light or speed, it's breaking the law regardless of whether there is a victim or not.

its acctually a traffic violation..which isnt a crime!!!

...you see my point.:) ..because there is no victim!

wether you speed or wether somone uses pirate software ...there is no crime ...nobody has been violated in any way.

now if that speeding car crashes into someone and injures them ..or if somebody uses pirate software that they would have bought normaly thus depriving the author of cash.. then the situation changes significantly.

its all about the law..not what anybody thinks is wrong or right ...if you dont like the law then vote somebody else in that will change the law...its your right to do so.

its all quite grey according to the law...you see my point.:) ..there is no victim!..

You're just kidding around of course. :D

wether you speed or wether somone uses pirate software ...there is no crime ...nobody has been violated in any way.

I seriously hope you don't believe that. Perhaps you just don't know the definition of the word 'Crime'. Here ya go...

http://www.merriam-webster.com/dictionary/crime

The first entry is the pertinent one.

It's not a matter of whether there is a victim or someone has been violated, but merely whether or not a law has been broken. Stealing is breaking the law, be it a car, a cd or software; and it is a crime. So is speeding.

I take software piracy pretty seriously on this site. And I'm pretty aggressive about banning people who openly admit to stealing software. The last thing I want is for Homerecording to become a haven for hackers and thieves, the integrity of the site will go to shit.

So be careful what you advocate:

the law is what it is ...live with it or vote somebody in that will change that law....your choice...go vote... do your thing.
