How do I produce a mix on my desk to go to Nuendo?

Hi, I am new here so please be gentle LOL.
I have an alesis multimix 16 firewire, this is going into a PC (really good Spec) and I am using Nuendo. My question is that I have been getting on fine with the recording side but when I want to mix down I want to actually feel the faders and do it by hand and not through Nuendo via a mouse. This said is it possible to send the signal (or say drums on multiple channels) back into the desk via firewire and use the actually desk to create a mix and have that sent back into Nuendo? I have looked at the outputs in Nuendo and there is only an alesis asio stereo output! Many thanks if anyone can help

I know it's possible for the multitrack programs I'm familiar with, but as far as nuendo goes, I have no idea...

Hi, Thanks for reply. So is it safe to say that the actual Alesis multimix16 firewire is able to do this but the software can't? So if I used another form of software would this give me the multiple outputs I need to get back into the desk and then use the mix from the desk to go back into the software. Its frustrating because it has onboard effects etc and you can only use these in the initial recording stage which is obviously bad to do, I want to EQ/FX Levels after I have initially recorded. I have used some other software in the past but not really familiar with such as Logic. Many thanks

So, since I KNOW you can send multichannel audio out of Nuendo, the above line tells me that you can only send a stereo mix to the Alesis via FireWire.

To be clear, this is not a limitation in Nuendo, but a limitation in Multimix16.

Dixie, you have two problems; the first is that the Alesis Multimix will not work as a control surface for *ANY* software, that's not what it does. It is an analog mixer with an analog-to-digital interface so you can send your signals digitally directly to your PC to record. But it cannot control the software itself.

What you need to do that is either a full digital mixer with software control capability, or a dedicated control surface, which is something that looks like a mixer, but is really noting more than a software controller.

The next thing you need after you have the right hardware, is a legal copy of software. Cracked/pirated software downloaded off of piracy sites run by the Russian mafia don't work with external controllers.

I must have missed it, but I'm curious as to why you think she pirated anything, or why the piracy issue needs to be brought up?

A combination of the hardware she actually owns (which is farely low end, to be honest), her lack of understanding of relatively basic concepts, combined with the fact she has probably the most expensive DAW on the market (not to mention that it's designed for film post production, not music production, and if she shopped around and did her research she would realize that other, far cheaper programs would actually serve her purposes even better) is a fishy combination at best.

Granted, she may have paid the $1800 for Nuendo, but paying 3 times the amount of her hardware for some software is a very silly notion.

Now I'm not the type to accuse people of piracy, since that's pretty douche bagish in my opinion. But the moment I read her post, alarm bells rang in my head.

Because nobody who buys a small-format entry-level analog mixer with the intention of using it as a digital software control surface is going to go out and buy $2,000 worth of video post-production software at the same time. And as George points out, the mixer already comes with Nuendo's little brother (they are both Steinberg products and use the identical audio engine.)

Stick around here for a while and you'll discover three things, Poet; first that Nuendo is second only to the various Waves bundles for ultra-expensive, unnecessary software pirated by newcomers to this racket, and second that this board has a no-support-for-piracy policy that the mods do enforce, and third that many of the regular members here - including myself - either are currently or were at one time audio software developers ourselves, and find that the real douchbags are those that not only willingly steal thousands of dollars worth of software, but actually publicly advertise that fact on public bulletin boards.

Nevertheless, the important point here remains true, that even with the Cubase LE that the mixer comes with, dixie cannot use the mixer the way they are describing because it's not that kind of device.

especially when they are trying to use them with their Soundblaster Xtreme X-Fi Titanium or whatever the latest gaming board is these days....

The software I have is by no means worth $1700 or thereabouts, it was much much cheaper than that as I got it off ebay. I bought a guitar the other day which was worth around $800 and I got it for $150!!!!! Does that mean its fake or a copy? Not that I feel I need to explain myself to some self indulged idiots!!!!!
As far as someone mentioning a soundblaster gaming card etc, the multimix is actually an audio interface! Those who tried giving me advise then thankyou, and if anyone else would like to question what other equipment I have then feel free to ask

I feel your pain but buying it off ebay doesn't mean it isn't pirated. Did you get a dongle with it?

Well, if you have Nuendo, it is worth about $1800 new. I just did a search on eBay and I see it there going between $750 and $1800.

No one is accusing you of illegally downloading software (yet!), but it makes people wonder when you have an entry level interface with high-end audio/video software. We don't allow people to promote or advocate piracy on this site and it's my job to enforce that. If I had substantial reason to believe you are asking about pirated software, I would have banned you by now.

If you go back and reread my post, you'll see I was answering a question from Poetic Int. about piracy in general and why the issue was raised here.

And I do know what the Alesis Multimix is.

I don't know you so I have no reason to accuse you of anything but I fell for this once. I bought a "Legal" CD of Cubase SX off of eBay once and got screwed. Legal my ass. This was when I was just building up my studio and was quite naive. I felt really proud of myself until it crashed my system and it hit me that I'd been taken for a ride.

Maybe, and maybe not. Let the buyer beware as there are plenty of folks out there with a knock-off of anything for a price.

I uncovered a seller on eBay once who was selling counterfit Shure Beta 57A's by the handfull. The listing said, "Used once in my home studio but now I have no need for it". Upon very close inspection and comparison to another one I already had purchased from a genuine dealer revealed it was a fake. Then I checked the guys selling history and found he'd sold 35 of them in one month?! My fault for not doing the research before hand but, it makes my point.

OK, maybe I'm a bit off topic here but all said & done, let the buyer beware & be very careful buying off of the internet. I don't post here often but I lurk a lot and find that the vast majority of heavy posters on this forum are very informed & reliable.
