I wasnt sure where to post this but I guess guitar players are probably the first ones to get it. I just took a break in the middle of my day to just let it rip. I played my SG through a screaming Laney Lionheart and had a blast for a few minutes. I noticed the ringing immediately when I was finished. I dont usually notice the ringing when we play at night, I guess it is different in the middle of the day. A guy who plays drums here just started to get the persistant ringing all the time even if he hasnt played. What are your experiences with this?

Basically, not to fuck around at ALL when it comes to your ears. We're musicians, and especially for those of us into recording, we REALLY need to depend on them.

I rarely practice for extended periods long enough to really hurt myself, but I picked up a pair of these for gigging and for going to shows:

They're awesome. Going to hard rock and metal shows is actually more pleasant WITH them in than without, since they really are pretty full frequency and they knock the volume down at the loudest shows I've been to to a level where it's actually easier to distinguish different instruments.
 
I have it. It isn't a problem until I try to sleep. I have to have a fan on and I use environmental sounds like crickets/frogs to drown out the incessant ringing. But yeah, it's permanent. :(

That is what is happening to this drummer I know. My ears also are sensitive to sounds like a pipe being dropped or bottles being dropped. I guess it goes with the territory. I guess we have to manage it at some point

Tinnitus can be a real issue and not pleasant. I hope that isn't what you have. I wouldn't wish it on you despite what you may think. If it persists get it checked out. Look after your hearing it's your greatest tool.
 
I spent many years performing with rock and punk acts and well, stage volume just killed my ears.

Funny thing is, the only thing that really hurts anymore is sirens. Firetruck goes by and I have to cover my ears. It feels like my fillings are going to fall out, serious.

Again, dont assume what I am thinking. Mine goes away after a while when I stop playing but it could always get worse. Pete Towshend has it bad apparently, no wonder, but William Schatner has it bad also. Go figure.

Like I said you just now and in the past, keep posting rubbish that's going to hard for me to do.

I do hope you hearing dosen't get worse though, problems with your hearing is not good.

You might want to check out the House Ear Institute's web site for more information on hearing concerns. It sounds as though you might be experiencing a bit of what is called recruitment - if I spelled that right - also. This is a situation of certain sounds and or frequencies that for whatever reason are perceived louder than other frequencies to the degree of being painful or extremely uncomfortable

Tinnitus is also related to the aging process. After several years of noise exposure many folks begin to experience this to a greater or lesser degree. For some quite minor, but others can have serious problems from it. It's somewhat related to age related hearing loss. We all lose frequencies as we age - again some to a lesser or greater extent. Mix had an article several years ago on hearing and at that time there was even the concern of possible hearing loss from not only transient noise, but steady state noise as well. I have never heard any more on that, but that would be a serious concern.

Bottom line - if you enjoy listening to anything and want to keep enjoying it protect your hearing now. Your diet, noise exposure and overall health are all factors. I would encourage you to find out all you can.

Side comment: Muttley, I read nothing provocative in Pete's post. Perhaps you over reacted?
 
I just use mine to tune up my guitars to!

Some days, the ringing is in perfect 440 pitch! :D
 
Mine is permanent, but not intrusive. I hear it when I'm in a quiet environment.

Oddly enough, I got it while building my studio in the basement of my previous house. I used a Ramset to drive nails into the concrete. :o I couldn't find my earplugs and thought it was going to be quick and not too loud. I have been in louder environments, but I guess this put me over the edge.

Again oddly enough! I have just rebuilt some walls in my studios (squirrels had moved in) And I bought a Ramset, but I also bought a headset that I thought would be great to keep in the studio for when I am walking around setting up mikes while impatient musicians are waiting.

I play drums and in my Jam space the two 4x12"s for the guitar and the 2x15 for the bass are withing 4 feet of me and we jam loud (The drums are miced through the PA) and I allways get bad ringing after practice but after a couple days the ringing is mostly gone .... I used to wear ear plugs but I noticed that they for some reason caused me to get bad ear infections which seemed to cause me more dammage than the noise ......
