Cubase 5 choking

Don't stare at the eye.
Here's the deal: I upgraded my Cubase SX3 to Cubase 5 when I recently got a new machine. I had this project started in SX3 and am continuing it in 5. I've got vox (1-3 tracks) and a fairly hefty midi grand piano sample going in each song. I'm now adding drums and percussion--10 tracks.

Tracking the drums & perc was no problem. I even started mixing & editing a couple and that worked just great. In fact, I took one of the tunes to completion--EQ, verbs, compression, sends, groups, automation all over the place--the whole nine yards. No problem.

The very next tune I open to work on (fewer tracks but same setup as the last one) and it starts popping and stuttering on all the audio as soon as I add FX or comps to more than a channel or two. I then tried freezing all the tracks--there's less glitches, but they're still there.

I'm really styimied. The first tune ended up being 36 tracks when I was done--and it never so much as crackled. Now, one song later--with the same exact setup--and I can't up to 12 tracks working right. If it happened right from the get go, I'd know there was some universal problem. But for it to change behavior from song to song is throwing me.

FWIW, my DAW should have no trouble handling it--dual quad-core processors (the octo-core), 16 gigs of RAM, 4 terabytes of storage, with a terabyte dedicated to audio.

Anyone have any insight into this quirk in Cubase 5?

Thanks!

Never worked with Cubase, but if you send me your computer, I'm willing to check it out :D

Y'know...that's a great idea! But it's kinda heavy, so how about you imagine I sent it to you, and I'll imagine you figured it out. I'll bet we end up in the same place but about a week sooner and without shipping costs!

:D:D:D:D

Seriously, how're you doing Andy? How's the new addition to the family?

I'm good. Zach (new one) is also good. Raising 2 kids is a lot different than I thought it would be, but it's all worth it. Unfortunately, I'm still trying to find time to finish recording a backing track to another song to sing at church in a little over month. Work has been crazy, and while the pay will be nice, the lack of time/sleep is somewhat disconcerting. Thanks for asking, though.

How have you been?

Sounds like the computer switched to a none asio driver.

This happens if you switch the computer on, before you switch your audio interface on.

Did you check under Device setup.

Or was the previous Cubase illegal?

Cheers

Wim

Thanks Wim. This (along with the previous version) is legal. I hadn't checked the ASIO driver. There's a chance the mac fired up before my TASCAM, so that's a great idea. I'll check it tonight when I get back home.
