Speaker Upgrade

I play in a hard rock/metal band, and i dont HATE the tone of my ashdown fallen angel 60w combo, but its not quite there. Wondering if swapping in a couple of V30's might help it along?? I've heard a speaker upgrade can make a big difference.
 
a speaker change absolutely can make a giant difference.
What speakers are in there now?

Personally, I LOVE the sound of the V30's. It's enough money though, that I would try to find a way to try before you buy.

I have a hard time seeing how anyone might not like the Vintage 30's but they may not be best for you.
 
All the bands who have tone i love use V30's, its whats got me onto them. Not sure of the make of speakers, its at my praccy room at the minute, they're just stock.
 
well I can tell you that speakers can totally change the sound of an amp.
I have a Blues Junior that was a total POS with the stock speaker. sounded even worse with a Weber in it ........ for some reason A Black Widow cleaned it up and let me get some nice Fender clean out of it ..... I guess 'cause the BW is so efficient. Normally I wouldn't even consider a BW but it was lying around so I tried it just for the hell of it and for that particular amp it just seems to work well.
But the differences as I put in different speakers was usually dramatic.

Also, I have a V30 in a cab and every one of my amps (14 of 'em) sound great thru it. So if the guys you like use 'em ...... then I'd go for it 'cause mine really does sound very, very good.
 
Yeah I'm with Bobbie on this one; the Vintage 30 is my all time favorite guitar speaker. I have them in an early 70's Princeton Reverb, Blues Junior and a single 12 cabinet. A friend has them in his Silver Face Non Master Twin Reverb and they made a huge improvement. Good Stuff
 
I bought an Avatar Cabinet off of craigslist with V30s in it, and I'm loving it. The bass and mids are nice and THICK. Tames a lot of that shrill high-end the crappy eminence speakers have.

If I was playing metal in any drop tunings I wouldn't dream of anything else.
 
My DSL401's tone improved a huge amount by changing the stockie to a V30.:)
 
Peavey does make nice speakers...I have a 4-12 cabinet with scorpions and it rocks...cabnet design is cool too...its a roadcase.

If you want to sound like you are playing through a wet blanket then scorpion speakers rock. Black widows are not quite as bad but they still sound like dung when compared to pretty much any Celestion. The Peavey cabs are built solid I'll give them that.
 
speaker change... there's nothing that will change tone for the better or worse.

for rock and metal, V30s are a staple and so are Greenbacks, though power handling can be an issue for Greenbacks.

if you want to spend a bit more, the Scumback M75 is pretty awesome.

I have quite a few gtr speakers just for this purpose, changing the tone and here's my list

which is why I was so surprised that it was a perfect speaker for the Blues Junior.
I think of Black Widows as more of a sound reinforcement speaker ....... for monitors and such.
But it does work unbelievably well in that Blues Jr.

I guess the muddy speaker canceled out the natural harshness of the amp. Maybe Fender should include a free horse blanket with every Blues junior purchase. :D
 
The t75 is hands down my favorite speaker, but the v30 is awesome as well. Mixed together is awesome too. Just depends on the sound you want.

maybe others hear the similarity but I don't. I was hoping I had a Governor loaded in a cab now and I'd do a comparison clip if you like, but I don't.

I think the Wizard is closer to a V30 than the Governor but still not that close. The V12 is probably the closed of the Eminence speakers I own. I do have the Wizard and V12 loaded in a 2x12 and can do a V30-Wizard-V12 clip although the V30 will be in a 4x12.

And also, what ARE your thoughts on how the Governor sounds?
I see you do have one you must use for something.

that's pretty interesting ..... the V12 is SO much brighter. The Wizard sounds pretty good though I prefer the V30 out of this group.

That was an interesting comparison. Is the Mesa an open back? It sounded like it. If not than I would say they are both way bright as compared to the V30.

My quest for tone lead me to my 2x12 semi openback loaded with Tonespotters. Its a fat warm tone though so it may not be the best for metal. Fat bottom with glassy highs. HERE is a collab I did using the cab. (its a full mix but you can hear my guitar well).

nope, the Mesa 2x12 is Closed Back.

the tone is not crafted for any purpose. I have been playing around with the RevJrPro at very low Gain settings and that's pretty much what I tracked. I felt it gave a good tone to hear the speaker differences.

a better comparison would be all miced using the same 1x12 cab.
