I've been recording in my basement for some time now, and it's always sounded quite decent (surprisingly, considering I have all concrete walls and a low plaster ceiling!) but it's never felt quite like a "studio". Since I'm about to graduate university this September, I thought it was time to pour some sweat and blood into making my basement look more like a studio. I have a lot of plans in my head, but I'm just getting started and thought I'd share updates as I go along on a thread in this forum. Hope you guys enjoy watching this progress with me (if anyone actually reads this) and if you see me doing something wrong and know an extremely cost effective way to fix it, let me know. Most of it is just aesthetics, but I'm doing some acoustic treatment and building, but mostly using free or very cheap stuff, so try to keep it in that mindset when giving advice. Thanks to all you guys who have helped me along the way and been very encouraging thus far!

Before dumping any money into building anything, I'd recommend looking at the wealth of information on John Sayers site here: http://www.johnlsayers.com/phpBB2/index.php

There is more information about studio design & construction then you'll ever need to know. Spend a couple days looking at all the threads and you will lean how much you don't know about studio designs (not to mention avoid costly mistakes). Good look!

I'm almost afraid to show the before, because last time I posted this picture, everyone turned into my mother and told me to clean :p. But here's a picture of what may basement started out as.

I decided I don't use the turn-tables enough to warrant them taking up space (but hopefully when my sister moves out, there will be room for them upstairs!). I'll hopefully be getting a futon to put in it's place, which still takes up space, but gives people a place to sit, and makes it a more relaxed atmosphere. I also hung a real curtain in place of that smooth jazz banner, which you should see in a later picture. But the first real order of business I did was paint one of the walls. It's mostly white down there (and pretty old white at that) so I thought getting a colour on one of the walls would be a good start to making it feel a little more cozy :) Just a warning, it's still a mess, but that's because I'm rearranging the entire basement, so everything's kind of just sitting in the middle of the room for right now.

It's a nice blueish-green, and is actually a semi-gloss, which I thought would look awful, but actually looks fine since there's hardly any natural light down there, and will be easy to clean when some rowdy kids come record!

Here you can see just how much of a mess it is right now, and where my desk currently is. I'm planning to move it against the wall on the opposite side of the basement. I'm also going to be moving the drums over to where my desk is now and have that part sections off a little bit, and line the walls over there with mattresses and hopefully put a layer of blankets between the ducts and the drums.

Here's where I'm moving my desk to. I started to hang some mattress toppers up, since that's all I really have to work with right now. The walls here are pretty badly damaged, so I needed to cover them up anyways, and I thought this was a good solution, since they're also concrete. Unfortunately, some of the mattress toppers were covered in mold, so I have to wait until I can afford some new ones before I can move my desk over there, but I'm pretty excited to get some more space and get the heck out of that corner!

That's pretty much what I've done so far. I also started making some absorption panels to hang over the invisible futon using some frames I trash-picked and some R-10 foam insulation. I know I should be using a higher number for these, but I couldn't really afford much, and like I said, my basement already sounds pretty good, so it's mostly for aesthetics, and if they happen to do any absorption, it's a bonus!

I also bought proper R-19 batt I plan on stuffing those shelves with to turn into movable isolation walls. The shelves were free of course!

That's it so far! Let me know what you think. I still have lots of details I left out because I just haven't been able to do it yet, but I'll keep updating as I get more work done.

Thanks for the link Simman! Most of what I'm doing is going to be free or recycled stuff. The paint was free, as was most of the furniture I have down there. I don't plan on pouring more than 100 dollars or so into this "renovation", and it's mostly aesthetic stuff, with some acoustic stuff in mind. I'll still check out that link though for sure, I just hope it doesn't make me spend more money!!
