If I had to upgrade either RAM or CPU right now...

So I think my recording PC may need an upgrade pretty soon. I built it in Spring 07, and it wasn't even top of the line, but it was built with upgradability in mind. I am starting to hit some playback errors in my project files, especially when there's two VSTi's running and lots of tracks.

Obviously I need to upgrade both RAM and CPU, but if I was to do one now and one later....well here is what I have:

Windows XP SP2
Presonus Firestudio
Cubase LE
Pentium D 820 (one of the first dual core chips)
1 GB 667 RAM

So my two options would be throwing another gig of 667 ram in (667 should be damn cheap now) or upgrading the CPU to a Core 2 Duo, which are fairly cheap nowadays as well.

Ive always been an AMD fan since the old 486 pc's. But the first logical step would be more ram. The only problem is that older ram is actually alot of times more than new stuff. DDR2 memory is alot cheaper than DDR. Newegg is the best place to get current and the best prices. As far as Intel boards go, and the memory types used on them I dont keep track. But, you can get an AMD Quad core Phenom and 4 gigs and a motherboard for under $250. I imagine an Intel based equiv. would be a few $100 more.

Memory is SUPER cheap right now. Manufacturers have excess stock and the recession is driving prices even further down. Go with at least 3 gig if your board will support it. Seriously you may never be able to buy memory this cheaply again.

667 is DDR2 bro ;)

I never said upgrading motherboard. I built this computer specifically for upgradability in mind, so there's no need for a new mobo. I'm pretty sure this board supports QuadCore as it is.

Right now I have 2x512 memory, and I would prefer to get another 2x512, although I could go for 2x1024 as well to bump it up to 3 gigs.

2GB ram that is 1066MHZ should do you fine.
or 4GB 800MHZ :D

Alright RAM it is.

I actually don't use Newegg, I have a specialty computer store that's a local business that I go through. They have the best prices in town (even beats Fry's at times). They're a little bit higher than Newegg but why not?

Its good to support a local store. My closest store is Microcenter (about 60 miles) and I love to go there. Actually need to in a few days to pick up a few flat screens. They have prices that rival online and a nice game department. :)
