Don't stare at the eye.
Not so much a clinic submission here, though it is an MP3--so I put it here instead of Mics or Recording Techniques. I'm having a really good time tracking electric with a stereo ribbon in mid/side configuration. Have a listen:

One nice thing is that I'm able to get this at real reasonable volume levels. I just tracked this while the fam is watching TV in the room right over me.

Hey Bob, long time no hear.....:D
Really soothing stuff...I was imagining being on a beach in the evening watching the setting sun and feeling mellow. It's wonderful that you can play so many different styles and still retain your identity. The sound of the guitar is so beautifully warm and the piece is sublime. Love it!

Joe :):):):)

Real nice, real mellow. The tone is very good, suits you well. I'm not enough of a mic guy to judge the mic, but it's working for ya.

Mid side sounding good. Two ribbons, or a ribbon and LDC? ACM group buy ribbon mics? C'mon spill the beans. Oh yeah, it sounds great as always.

Two ribbons--the ACM 3's. I actually bolted 'em together top to top at 90 degrees from each other. Works like a champ for mide side or x/y...

OK, sounds like a Blumlein Pair config. I think I get the picture. It sounds gorgeous. I may have to get a couple of those ACM3 ribbons.

Smooth, lush, laid-back and tastefully played. A good coverage of the spectrum as well throughout the piece.

I understand you've posted this as a demonstration of your success with ribbon mikes, and it certainly does this well.

I truly enjoyed that WS ...

The tone is perfect for the setting and feel of the piece. The ribbons lend almost a "woody" tone ... definitely a smoothness, lacking in the normal "bite" one gets from an elec ...

And the configuration you employed gives the lead a great sense of space.

Nice work. You gave me great sonic ideas for the mental toolbox to use later.

Best,

K-

Very smooth and full sounding speed racer :)!

Excellent playing!

I have never used ribbon mics or even seen them in person...never even heard of 'em before coming to this site...I can and will do my own reading, but what in general is the deal with these kind of mics? Are they known for imparting a certain sort of sound to the source?..just curious...

Really nice recording :D:cool:!

Ribbon Mics! Man, I was chuffed just getting a cheap LDC.
I can hear why they are so renowned though.
Something for the wish list.
Nice sound, smooth, cultured and probably optimal for a old style blues ramble.
Nice track, mellow with some sting.
The bass runs are a bit jazz for me (I'm a plod bassist so it's probably just sour grapes).
White Strat playing & ribbon recording is obviously a delighful combination.
The guitar sound would be just as tastey over a bit of blues rock or something elegant like Budgie's "Parents".

Thanks for the kind words everyone. I'm now working on a much heavier sampling done with the ribbon mics. I've had 'em for a couple years, but I'm just now finding the sweet spot with my amp and the lights are really coming on. I'm finding (and you'll see what I mean in a day or so) that they're just as good for heavier stuff.

For the record--on that clip, only the lead was with ribbon mics. The acoustic was double tracked with a SDC, the bass was DI through the instrument in of a pre, and the drums were a loop. (Just didn't want to confuse anyone with the excitement over the ribbon mic.)

Nice playing White Strat,
Really smooth & mellow, good stuff. Wish I could get my recordings to sound this good. Like the chops on the guitar too. Very impressive!

Thanks True! It's a little cool yet for soul catching! And I wish I was looking over water when I played that--but I get what you mean. I appreciate the listen and encouragement!

Thanks minerman--I appreciate the kind words. And believe me, my recordings didn't always sound like that either! They still don't sometimes. Keep at it! :)
