Which Lundahl Transformer for Apex 460 mod?

I'm generally new to all this, but I have successfully modded an Apex 460 with a Peluso CEK112 capsule and a Cinemag 2480 transformer.

I'm now waiting on delivery of a Peluso PK67 capsule to mod another Apex 460 tube mic. I'd like to use a Lundahl transformer, but I'm not sure of the model number to order.

Has anyone tried the Lundahl LL1578 at 10:1? Will it fit? Is there another Lundahl transformer that would be more suitable?

I would appreciate hearing from anyone who's done this already let me know what model of Lundahl transformer they've used. I've tried various searches, but haven't been able to find the specific model number.

What valve are you using, and in what configuration?

The stock 460 circuit is a cathode-follower at the output and doesn't require a high ratio. I wouldn't use that though.

You could try the Gyraf G7 circuit (still using the original PCB with some mods) with a LL1538. By the way, with the PK67 capsule, I might try a filter if you find it too bright. It's quite easy to add a crude one by just loading the output from the plate with a cap to get closer to something like a U67 amp frequency response.

Rodabod,

Thanks for your reply

I was thinking of a 6072a, which is what I've got in the other Apex 460.

I'm not at the point where I'm capable of safely messing with the rest of the circuit-- I want to keep it simple, and just change the capsule & the transformer.

It might fit. You'll probably have to remove the can for the old transformer and find a way to mount it internally. It's a PC mounted transformer in its own housing.

I just picked up a stock Apex 460 for my son's birthday :D (really! he likes it!)

I'm inclined to wait until TnC comes out with their mod kits for the ACM-1200 -- does that make sense? The mics look quite a bit alike, but I don't have a 1200, so I can't compare.

I have one of the Stellars with the chrome grill on the way. I'm pretty sure I've figured out how to convert the same circuit as a C12. It's going to involve replacing and removing a lot of things. I've got a double sided CK12 style capsule and a 2480. Gonna see if it's better than the other mod we've done here over the years.

I have an MXL V69 that had a dead circuit board. I replaced it with an authentic Ela M circuit with a Vienna capsule and the 2480. Altered the PS too. It sounds spectacular!

With the stock circuit, something like the LL1538 should work ok. The Lundahls are quite clear sounding; keep this in mind. I might have a look at what Oliver Archut is selling from AMI/TAB in case something there takes your fancy too.

I would contact Kevin Carter at kandkaudio.com He is the importer for the Lundahl Transformer. He is a super guy and always willing to help.
