Hi heard the song 'Better' on the radio the other day and it has some decent hooks but I think the drive and power of the song that should be there is just lost with all the heavy edits i think im hearing. Is it just me?

i dont exactly know what you mean by "edits" however i think it does lack power and depth. it all seems in mono-- the dynamics seem marginally better than other modern records, however.

I have only heard the title track, but I know that the opening riff seemed to suck the air out of my ears, for lack of a better description. Sounded really over processed and just out of place for GNR. I did find it amusing when later in the tune there where little Slash style guitar fills. Did Slash and crew record any of "Chinese Democracy" before they bolted?

by edits i mean copy and pasted. it sounds as if elements were forced together. parts seem out of place.

dont totally agree. but i would say the record does lack feeling/depth. Axl seemed to have a few good ideas but sat on them WAY too long and went TOO far with production.

Chinese Democracy ended up being the most long awaited letdown of history

they had to wait 17 years or more for that? dang!
I was talking more size of letdown than length. As far as length, there's a record that no on can beat: The Beatles reunion concert album. :D

Well, it certainly didn't have the natural flow of the original records given that Axl got into a more beat oriented style, which makes "My World" truly stand out as the end of the original band. But all music recorded and released by major labels today has that over polished sheen to it. Its just a matter of how much.

I bought the record under the impression of it being an Axl Rose solo record, as it really is, with no care if it sounded like GNFNR, just like when I bought those Velvet Revolver albums. And you know what...Chinese Democracy has some great guitar riffs, some great harmonies/melodies, and some great vocals. I will go as far as saying it has some really great songs. I was impressed. Outside of some of the processed drums and sound effects, which I found cheesy, I think this would be an epic album.

What I want to know is how much of the album was recorded recently. It doesn't sound like 1995. There are parts on songs like Madagascar that have a well aged vocal, but then there are a few miscellaneous parts throughout the album where he sounds a lot younger.

I don't know if I'd say it sounds pro tools'd to hell and back exactly, but it DOES sound overproduced. A lot of the material would be better if it'd had more room to breathe, I think.

Really, it's not a horrid album - it's just not nearly as memorable as GNR at their best. The more I listen, the more I stop trying to compare, and think, "Eh, this is a decent rock album with some great guitar solos."

Does anyone else hate the guitar tone with the dated 80s sounding reverb on the opening riff of the first single?

It is so far away from the raw guitar tone Slash had on their early stuff. blech.
