Anyone using Pt Le 8 yet?

I have been using Pro Tools since the beginning of this year. So I haven't been a DIGI user very long but I am very interested in upgrading to Pro Tools 8. The increased track count and track comping features seem well worth the upgrade cost. My question is this, is it too soon to upgrade or are Digidesign's updates typically bug free? I haven't been around long enough to know how these updates/upgrades go. Anyone running 8 on windows without any trouble? I would prefer not to be the guinea pig haha.
 
I was thinking of upgrading to pro tools LE 8, but I don't know. I mean I don't fully know how to even use 7.4 yet and I haven't had it that long, but who knows I might pick it up in the next upcoming weeks.

Ok good to know. I may take the plunge in the next week or so. As I stated before, I could really use the extended track count. I have been running pro tools 7 on an XP machine and it has been solid as a rock. A little worried about the switch but I don't have any clients or anything to worry about. Just my sanity lol.
 
I made the jump last week from 7.4 to 8. It went pretty seamlessly. I had to upgrade the OS to 10.5.5 before PT8 would load and the firmware update that the software gave my 003 took forever, but other than that, no problems at all. I've played around with the program a bit since then, although I haven't actually sat and recorded anything. Everything seems to be working fine.

As far as whether it makes sense to upgrade... i guess it depends on how useful the new features will be to you. There's a ton of new features in 8.0 and some of them are going to make some of the things I do a whole lot easier. It's a pretty significant upgrade to the software.
 
I have also moved to PT 8 on OSX 10.5.5.

I still have OSX 10.4.10 and PT 7.4.2 as a safety net.

PT 8 is very good, and certainly worth the upgrade in my opinion. The extras alone are worth the cost. The new interface is also a big welcome, as are the new graphics.

However, here are a few things that are not good, although they reside with 3rd party companies and not Digidesign.

  1. EZ Drummer loads and plays, albeit with a few quirks. Nashville & Percussion modules do not load their samples. You get their MIDI loops, but no sounds. I have uninstalled the said modules and then re-installed to no avail. The Mixer and MIDI loops windows do not open either, which makes the software 90% unuseable....
  2. IK Multimedia Amplitube 2 works fine until you access the Tuner and switch it on. Pro Tools freezes and the computer has to be re-started.
  3. WaveArts 5.3 works, albeit the Panaroma plug-in is not loaded at PT start-up. You get a message to dump it in the Plugins (Unused) folder.

That's it so far. I am in the studio again shortly to put PT 8 more through its paces. If this is interesting for you all, I can gladly continue to update this info.

Good points on the 3rd party stuff. The only third party plugs that I'm currently using that didn't come with PT8 are from UAD. They run off their own cards and I'm not having any trouble at all with them. But yes, that's a consideration that has to be made. If someone has a ton of third party stuff, they should check with the manufacturers of those things and see about PT8 compatibility or check to see if PT8 doesn't include something that would work in the place of that plug. For example, the TL Space reverb that comes with PT is probably as good or better than most of the reverb plugs people are using (IMO).
 
Correct, it does however come as part of the Music Production Toolkit (2)... along with Smack, Xpand!(2), Hybrid and some other goodies. I use it sparingly, like when no other 'verb will do as I find with most convultion reverbs, it's hard on the CPU.

Oops...you're right. I bought MPToolkit at the same time and I got confused. :o
