Different sounds, different flavors, different options.

I hear ya. I aint complaining, I'm just surpised how many some of you guys have.

I have hats, 3 crashes, a crash/ride, and a big ride and I don't see myself needing any more. :o

i've got 3 splashes now, a ride, crash ride turned into a sizzle ride, 2 china's (one is a mini) 2 crashes, hihats, and i'm working on getting a pair of mini-hats.

the 3rd splash, sizzle ride, and one of the chinas isn't pictured in the pic i posted, and drossfile i think your kit deserves honorable mention more than mine. that finish is just beautiful.

EDIT: forgot two zil-bels =] oh how i love those things.

thanks! yeah, i really love that finish.

as for the cymbal count, i have hats, ride, 4 crashes, china, splash, zil-bel. i definitely want to add another splash, and i'd be satisfied (for now).

i love my zil-bel too. probably the most consistent cymbal in production ever. and man do those things SING!

Man... I wish I had money and a rack to put all that stuff on. Although, honestly, all I really want is one more tom (maybe a 16"), a stand for my other splash, and maybe another crash to put on the other side of my kit for convenience. I don't think having a lot of crashses is all that useful because I don't think the subtle differences really read that well to the audience, but maybe that's just me.

yup. i've got the 6" mounted over my hihats, and the 9" beside my ride. makes for some interesting bits when used in conjunction with the ride bell. One of my splashes (the one that isn't pictured ) is a 16" K custom session crash that went through a house fire, cracked around one of the lathe lines, and the bell turned inside out all from the heat, so i cut it down and it sounds great. That 18" ZBT china of mine sounded like shit before that fire, but something about that heat just made that thing so much better.

it's true, which is why i've only got 2. you can definitely hear the difference from right around the kit, but once you get 3-4 rows back in an audience the difference kind of dissapears.

Yeah, nice kits though. But I can't believe how many cymbals some dudes, like PhilGood, have.

I got hats, 2 crashes and a ride.:o

Personally, I don't like having to lay into the same crash so many times on some beats. I prefer to let the crash rest before laying into it again. It saves cymbals and allows me to think about other ways of providing sounds on certain songs. Plus there are pitch options that allow different sounds depending on the song or an approach to playing a particular song. I like being able to express myself in as many ways as possible.

Plus there are combos that work for multiple accents, like going from the hi-hat to a splash and a small china leading into a crash. Quick accents that are quite musical.

hey philgood, we need a better look at that finish! i like your setup though.

Its a pretty standard wine colored finish. I have yet to find a camera that shows the true color. On some shots it looks blackish, and with a flash it almost looks pinkish, which is not what it looks like at all. It has a nice gloss, but I'm thinking about re-covering it. The guys that went to Westfest can attest to how it sounds. It's well tuned and all drums are in really good shape.

I tend to concentrate on sound vs. looks. That's what is most important to me. The snare is a custom drum I made myself with a keller shell. It has a deeply cut snare bed which requires very little tension and allows the drum to breathe dynamically. Although I'm not real happy with the cut, because slight adjustments reveal a rattle that shouldn't be there. I need to have it re-cut again, or start over with a new shell. I like a nice curve in the bottom head so that it doesn't require much tension and still maintains a nice even contact with the bottom head and snare bed without choking the bed.

sound is definitely the more important issue to me as well, but having drums that sound good and look pretty is always a plus. good point you make with the crashes too, philgood.

Here our my kits...Bought the Gretsch at a studio I was working and the Tama Superstar kit I bought brand new in 1980...I think...damn I am old.

Sweet! :)

I had a Superstar kit too... Around '82 I think? Gorgeous Cherry-Wine finish...

Still wish I had those sometimes... :(

And my Ludwig Vistalite Octoplus I had in the late 70's.... :(

And my '62 Ludwig Black Oyster Swirl (Ringo Wrap) 4 piece I learned to play on in the early 70's.... :(

*sigh*

I'm getting old too...
