What EXACTLY will change?

Listen Scooter, don't resist the change. Go with the flow, and in the end you'll find peace.

Love,

Scooter

Well... ok - Your avatar is very intimidating, so I will conform with your advised path in life.

But only if I can be this scooter:

Because by Dragon's own admission, his announcement doesn't reflect the facts of the situation.

That sounds like you're implying I'm full of shit, which I ain't, so why don't you try to be a little more suave?

My brief announcement may not have been able to reflect every possible fact of the situation, especially as every situation changes every moment (example: the bailout), but it was intended to give people the essential details. I admit using the word "moderation" once too often, which apparently triggered the more paranoid Cave denizens to think that the Audiofanzine people were planning to kick people's asses left and right, but that mistake has been explained by me in detail.

Dragon, What hasn't been adequately explained, at least to me is why you don't trust your own membership to help you realise where you want to go with this?

If you answer just one of my questions please answer this one.

This is like asking when I stopped beating my wife.

You're the one to bring up the strawman argument of me "not trusting my own membership". I never said I didn't trust my own membership, but I did say that I have trouble asking people for help.

Philippe contacted me back in April or so, out of the blue, telling me that he had a similar site to HomeRec in France and that maybe we could work together for mutual benefit. Well, maybe from an American that would mean "I'm going to kick your ass, Scooter" and I don't know if this is a French thing but Philippe has been completely straightforward and honest with me through all the months in between.

I realized quite awhile ago that HomeRec really needed more than just me, and several people have offered various services over the years, but I was never able to figure out how to work with them. But Philippe has a whole team of people who can do things, and I guess for me it's easier to work that way.

I want HomeRec to not just exist, but grow and be more of a success, and I have every confidence that Philippe and his crew at Audiofanzine can help us do that. He only started a few years ago, with far less Internet knowledge than I have, yet his site is a tremendous resource and pwns the French-speaking music world.

So please give it time, and let them give me some mental and emotional space. Thanks.

Does HR have coherent and achievable vision and mission statements?

Spare me the managerial mumbo jumbo, I've a degree in it! None of this 'stream-lining', 'outsourcing', 'back-office' crap.

That sounds like a pretty reasonable question, in APL style, of course. You say you want HR to grow and be more successful, but what exactly are you looking to do with it. Let us know, I'm sure there's a few people who would be willing to help...

I'm still relatively new here, but I get the feeling there's some kind of love-hate relationship going on here. :D

Hey Phillipe, can you give us back our signatures???

Cheers,

Ouch! Maybe this "outsourcing" isn't such a bad idea after all.

Lol - it's way past "outsourcing". Apparently Homerecording.com has (quite literally) been sold to the French guys.

I posted more details here: https://homerecording.com/bbs/showpost.php?p=3047337&postcount=367

Well then I hope two things:

1) I hope Dragon did well in the deal. That's the primary way many ventures make money: start 'em, grow 'em, sell 'em. (I don't think that was Dragon's goal, but I certainly do think it's his prerogative.)

2) I hope the new owners respect the culture & community here, and make decisions (or don't, as the case may be) that make it a place we all want to stay a part of.

Well said - I hope they upgrade the server package with ThePlanet. Get us off the shared 386 machine, Phillipe! And turn on signatures, ffs. It's the one courtesy that I see all the local professionals asking for repeatedly - It takes like 3 clicks in your admin panel - just do it!! What better way to say "Hey - We kickass - love us!"

Thats fine Dragon and please understand I have no problem with moving forward and understand that trust goes two ways. Equally I trust that HR has always meant enough to you not to just toss it aside. I've offered my help to you and the membership in anyway I can as have others. If you know me from the guitar and bass board you'd know that I stump up if asked and generally understand the subject matter. I wish you all the best and shall direct all further questions to Phillipe as it seems he is now in charge of moving forward.

Thanks for your efforts over the years and I hope you can return to enjoying the site in the near future as it seems you have been unable to do that in recent times.

All the best

I'm not American by the way. I'm closer to Phillipe and his crew than most so I have a handle on that side of things.;)

Sure, don't worry about that. I'm finishing a (quite long) post with details and I think you will be reassured. I want to write a clean and clear version so probably it will be online on Monday because, you know... I'm French and French people are lazy so they don't work during the week-end ;)

We just made a (quite big) improvement
By the way the hardware is good (bi Xeon 2800 with 2 GB, maybe in the future we will put 4 GB) but we improved the software tuning, installing APC (a PHP accelerator) and tuning MySQL. It should improve the speed, we will see.

By the way, the ping to the server from Europe is about 120ms which is not really good. I guess all people from Europe here think HR is a bit slow because of this. Funny when we think that our provider in France provides 30 ms ping to US ;)

About the signatures I will talk about it with David but I don't promise anything yet :)

Uhmmm I've noticed much more complaints from those on in the US. Homerec is pretty speedy for me and I'm in Europe.

Yep it's generally quite reliable from the UK as well. Problems on occasion but not as much as some report.

About the sig thing I suggested a solution to Dragon in another thread.

Create another member group with the same rights as the current one and disable sigs. Switch sigs back on for the default group. Anyone who abuses the sig rules gets moved to the new member group without sigs?

About 10 minutes work and a small bit of work for all you new mods.;)

Go on you know you want to make a good impression with us crusty old members. Do it now, you know you want to..:)
