Hey im new here, but a long time browser and I am hoping someone has some experience with the Mbox 2 Micro. I need to upgrade protools and I figure since this device comes with LE7.4 and a free upgrade to 8.0 that it might be a good idea, as I would love to have the added feature of working on projects away from home. My laptop is actually better than my recording desktop as its a dual core, 3gb ram etc.)

My question is, does the mbox 2 micro have a low latency for playback, or is it an external soundcard? I ask because I have used cubase on my laptop previously and the laptop soundcard isn't as powerful as when I used to use cubase with an M-Audio FW 410 (external soundcard) so when i would play things back there was like a 1 sec delay from when i clicked play to when it started to play the music, became kind of annoying. Any input? Hopefully I have made sense here.

There is almost no latency that is noticable at all. It's not exactly an external sound card, but that is the best way of viewing it to know what it does.

I wouldn't try to record much vocals into them, as I really don't like the preamp, but thats just an opinion. But its good for if you're on the go a lot and need to get some work done in PT:)

i fear a mixup here?

mbox 2 micro has no preamp. it's the smallest in the rage and allows for audio monitoring only.

to the OP, i can't image the micro would have a hugely noticable latency, being that the ONLY thing it does is output audio. i'd hope that they would make it good at what it does,lol...

out of interest, when you had the problem before, did you try to remedy it by adjusting your device options for buffers etc?

YA..Is'nt the micro like a USB stick?

Ya thats good to know, and no at the time I don't think i had bothered with adjusting the settings because i was only using cubase (not my main recording platform) to just edit some mp3's to make ringtones. But i had figured if protools were like that when i want to edit projects on the road that I would likely be pretty annoyed. So I had my parents buy it for me online as a christmas gift (of course they'll wrap it and put it under the tree, nice to experience the joy of tearing wrapping paper off free stuff ;-) So i wont know how it works until chritmas day but either way I know I am gonna benefit greatly from this device.

ps. Yes I am aware there is no preamp in it. couldn't imagine it being of any decent quality if it was that small ;-)
