No Woman No Cry - Greg Marley goofiness

Like Joey said, your drums always sound killer--but dude you do it all. You're vocals are the perfect mix of yell & sing with the oh so cool chorus harmonies.

And your guitars sound great. Tought and edgy with great separation. What're you using for the guitar chain!

Love it, man... :D

Greg,
I approach this with caution as I LOVE this song - I bought the album when it 1st came out (Rastaman Vibrations - to my mind the BEST Marley album post Peter & Bunny)
I like your version - it emphasises the misunderstanding I had of the lyric _ I 1st understood it to mean if you don't have a woman you won't end up in torment.
This is a punkska'd version that the Mighty Mighty Bosstones would pay good money for.
You get the spliff & nod of approval from this old sicko who saw Marley two nights in a row in '77.
ONLY 1 suggestion. I'd OD an extra guitar playing up the ska riff. As it stands though I give it 2 ceremonial tricolour berets, a bottle of rum and Bunny Wailers toenail clippings - it's that good!
Thanks Ray. Yeah it wasn't until I really read the lyrics that I figured out he means, "no woman, don't cry".

When I was tracking the guitar ideas, I had a "wacka-wacka" ska sounding guitar line running under the verses, but it was too busy and cluttered sounding so I scrapped it. :o

This is great! Personally, I love reggae (maybe is an island thing) and even this doesn't resemble anything near reggae, you've done justice to a great song. A brass section in this would be killer! Great work as always, bud.
Thanks dude. :)

Quick and nasty, I hear that's the way you screw. :)

This is a ton of fun, as is pretty much everything you do. You're a punk at heart, it shows in your playing, and especially your singing. I'd slam dance, but the cats are too small, I'd hurt them..

And we'll get blkdog7 converted, I'm sure of it. :D
Haha, thanks man....except for the screw part. ;)

Ha ha, this is great. I gotta go take some more blood pressure medicine now. Yeah, that's what we'll call it. :D

You nailed the vocals and I'm lovin the kick. Good suggestion on the wife's part.

Cool man.
Thanks Chili. I really didn't want to do this at first, but she nagged me into it. I told her "it's gonna be wild and sucky". She said "just do it". :p

Thanks dude. The guitar sounds are really simple - it's all through Guitar Rig. I plug straight into my firepod, pull up Guitar Rig, dial in a cool tone, and let er rip. I wish I had an array of badass amps and mics and a killer micing technique, but I'm just a lowly drummer, so I've been using Guitar Rig for my sounds. It's an awesome program. Lots of flexibility.

Groovey Dude !!!! Im voting Greg/Dogman all the way !!!!!! What are you gonna legalize when your in offce ???????????

Lowly my arse! You're a great drummer--and your guitar tracks sound better than those of half the guitarists around here (mine included sometimes). Your straight ahead, no nonsense approach serves you well and makes for some great sounding tunes!

exactly .....
a lot of us spend hours twisting an SM 57 in front of a speaker and never really find what we want. But you have it all figured out, so hats off ;)

that's a fine fine sun-tan you got in the picture, mon...you should stay outa the sun for a while, what with the ozone layer and all :D

Sounds brilliant on my PC speakers mate. Awesome musical and production skills

Well thanks man. I feel a no-nonsense approach to anything in life is the only way to go. :)

Cool. Thanks for listening.

Wow, that´s awesome!
Maybe a bit too bass heavy, but good.
Thanks for checking it out. Do you mean "bass heavy" in regards to the mix, or is the bass guitar too loud?

The amount of bass guitar is ok, but I would back off a bit the low end of it. (I moved the 60 and 170hz fader in winamp -1.7db it says, and it sounds better, just for a starting point)

Another thing I noticed is two clicks at 0:01 and 0:03, probably some tracks starting. You should use a short fade in on those.

Those aren't clicks. That's a nylon tipped drum stick slapping an 18" floor tom. :D

I'll look into the bass issue. Thanks.

Ballsy sound, well balanced mix, engaging vocal and tight playing overall.

Small thing - at 1:44-54 there's an odd rhythmic thing going on with the quick repeated 16th notes - sounds off a bit. Maybe it's been mentioned already - didn't have time to read the whole thread.

2:00-30 - lead guitar sounds really good but it's too low in the mix!

Lol. That "odd rhythmic" thing is me trying to drag the beat a little while double-kicking at 250bpm. I know it's goofy but I kind of liked it. :D

Thanks for the listen and comments.

I really dig your music Greg! Including this one! I would love to hear you do a cover rancid - time bomb! It should fit you like a hand in a glove!
If you ever do it, please PM me:)

Taken me 2 months to discover this since you posted it and i totaly LOVE IT!

I think the playing is steller in all departments and you've really captured the "in your faceness" of this style in your mixing. Someone said it was a bit bass heavy, I didn't think it was. Sounded well balanced across the spectrum and I loved the mid range grunt/meatiness of the bass which I think this style cries out for to have the bassline punching through the mix.

You mentioned using guitar rig for your guitars, are you using that for the bass too? I use a line6 UX1 for direct recording with either gearbox or podfarm plugins but I recently purchased IK multimedia's Ampeg SVX for the bass and this is exactly the kind of tones I've been finding it great for.

Hats off for a great cover. :)

Thanks a lot. I appreciate the listen and comments.

Yeah I used Guitar Rig for the bass too. It has a cool old-school SVT-something or other that gives some awesome bass sounds.

Gerg should start a fanclub for all his adoring fans to join. When they write in, they get a signed Gerg photo and a couple of pin badges to put on their satchels.

Actually ...... that sounds like a great idea! Where do I send my stamped addressed envelope?
