Does anyone know where I can get a free MP3 encoder? Where can I purchase the MP3 that comes with Pro Tools? I have the demo version but its expired. I need to email a friend a project soon, and I need it to be mp3.

Help, anyone? Thanks.:)

A couple times i've burnt a cd with my mix on it, then I pop it back into my computer and rip it into my media player as an Mp3. It's kind of a waste of a blank cd but I was in a hurry and my free wav to mp3 converter had surpassed it's trial period. Also, Some of those mp3 encoders claim to be "free" but when the file gets converted to mp3 it'll be missing the last thirty seconds or so. So yeah.. look out for that

Mac or PC? You could always import it into iTunes and convert it in there... Conveniently, it also has a lot of itag editing features!

I have been using Reaper for converting my WAV's into mp3's(if you're interested, youll also have to download lame_enc.dll and put it into C:/Program Files/Reaper to get the encoder). I've never had luck with those standalone file converters.

Shouldn't an mp3 encoder come standard on pro tools? We need small files for the interweb!

I use Switch all the time....love it

Pro Tools doesn't include the encoder is because of licensing reasons. They use the Fraunhofer codec...they could include it with the software, but then you'd probably see the price of PT bump up 20 bucks.

I'd rather have a few other things come standard first...

Cue obligatory calls for PDC...

Benny's very correct about the codec being Fraunhofer and licensing reasons being behind the charge.

Yep! This kinda sucks.:D

Actually, it would be quite interesting to have a MP3 encoder shoot-out. I'd be interested to see how PT's Fraunhofer option compares to, say, iTunes. If anyone has any other paying (or free) MP3 encoder, I've got the PT MP3 option and don't mind doing an iTunes convert as well.

If someone's interested in doing this, PM me and we'll get a thread and a poll going! I'll have to think of some encoder-challenging material!
