I'm new to home recording, I just bought a toneport UX2 from line 6 and I'm really having fun with it. I want to use this to record my demo and show them to the band. I may use it once in a while to record the whole band but I would rent the mics, so I don't want to build a real studio...!!

After looking at some options I want a laptop to do my recordings. I'm planning to buy: M-audio Studiophile AV 40 speakers, a M-Audio Nova mic to start recording my guitar, bass and vocals. I never bought any laptops before but I know a lot about desktop pc's since I build many of them for my friends.

I was looking at dell laptops, are there better choices? Don't want to do anyhing else than record music with it and dont want it to cost as much a my gaming pc!!

Is the toneport UX2 a good card ou should I buy a firewire card!?

the ux-2 is only going to give you 2 inputs I think, if you only need that many then I wouldnt worry too much.

I use Dell Laptops for recording all the time, one is a Vostro 1500 and the other is an inspiron 1500.

Like the macbooks, the dells will have a certain amount of problems with USB, but you can usually tweak around that

Problems with usb??
I'm already using my inspiron 600 with usb without problems.
Would it be better with firewire!?

Thanks

The Toneport will work fine for recording 1 track at a time(guitar, bass and vocals). If you want want to record a full band a firewire card would probably be in order.

If its working, its working. Some of the RICOH chipsets in the dells will make trouble. Sometimes the wifi/bluetooth drivers will give grief, but if you arent haveing trouble, don't worry about it, unless you need more inputs, in which case, FW would do well, though theres a whole TON of issues with most FW devices
