Hey guys,

been recording for about a year now, and my mic cabinet is as follows...

3 x Audix I-5's
1 x Shure Beta 52
2 x Marshal MXL 604's
1 x sennheiser vocal mic (really just for band practices, cant remember what model now)

im gonna be in the states in november and i really want to get a nice LDC to add to what i have already.. Seeing as i will probably only be able to buy one mic, i want to get one that will be able to be used in numerous scenarios.

Ideally id love to be able to use it to mic guit amps, use it for vocals, and maybe even in tracking drums.. maybe on the snare?

what can you guys recommend that could be this versatile, sound great, and not cost more than my car :)

(i cant really give you a budget yet)

thanks guys!

AT 4050 | AKG C414 | Shure KSM-44

Of the bunch, I like the Shure.

I'd say go for the 414, 44 or 4050 but, looking at your other mics, maybe you're on a budget. If so, I'd suggest the CAD M179 at $200 and under, for sheer versatility/utility. You might also want to check out an Octava mk-012 mic/preamp and the capsules that are available for it.

AT 4050 will fit your collection nicely.

Guitar amps and snare duty is better suited to dynamics and ribbons than condensors, in my limited experience. Ribbon mics are great for vocals, too - so I guess I'm pointing you at a ribbon or a fine dynamic.

Shure SM7b, Electrovoice RE-20, Sennheiser MD-421, Coles 4038, Royer 121...horses for courses. The physical properties of the mic may make it suited for one purpose over another; the RE-20 is a tough fit on a snare batter head. But any of these mics will shine on guitars and vocals.
