Tube amps on a budget...

I was at a rich guy's backyard party a few months ago, and a local guitar hero was playing. I noticed that he was getting an absolutely incredible tone from his PRS guitar. I walked up to the stage to see his amp; it was an old beat up tweed Peavey Vintage 50, and he wasn't playing through that amp because he can't afford something else.

Use what works for you, guys, and ignore anyone who makes a blanket statement like "all XYZ amps are crap". It's all subjective.

Look at the stage of any major rock band from Fleetwood Mac, to Nickelback, to Slayer. A LARGE majority of the times you will see a very limited list of different amps. Mesa Rectifier's are certainly in the top 3. None of those other amps, save Marshall, fender, and a few choice Vox, are anywhere in sight on that scale. I promise you that if you can name a major artist that uses Valve Kings that they have an endorsement deal, and they are more than likely modded. Fact is, Mesa is a well respected, widely used, professional piece of gear. You may like the tone you get, but the argument that it's "crap" is simply not winnable, and is really just kinda ridiculous. Go to a bunch of major studio's and count how many Mesa's, Marshall's, Fender's, and Vox you come across. Then count the number of Peavey's, Crate's, and V3's with 8" speakers you come across. There are respected professional industry standard pieces of equipment, and there is the armature B list.
So, I stick by my original statement. When it comes to your guitar rig, buy pro gear so you only have to spend the money once. You really take a beating on resale on the B stuff.

I don't remember anyone claiming that Boogies are crap.

my vote is for the tiny terror as well. Amazing amp.. not super versitile live but in the studio it's incredible. mind you you'd be paying $500 for just the head... do you have a cab?

The left guitar was recorded with an ernie ball guitar playing through a orange tiny terror with an orange 4x12 cab.. sounds incredible {the amp I mean.. i'm not that cocky :) } (this tune isn't 100% mixed yet btw)

How come home recording is the only forum where these pissin contests happen? :D

Just make sure you try everything you can try - live and in person, with your own guitar and your own pedals - before you decide what you want to spend your hard earned money on.

I didn't settle on the Mesa because everything else is crap, I settled on it because it is the first amp (plus speakers plus pedals) I've ever had that gives me the tone I've been hearing in my head all these years. I had a chance to buy a good Mesa 20 years ago, and I passed because I was too impulsive to save the extra money. If I had bought it then, I would still have it, and I would not have spent 10 times that much money weeding thru all the other amps I've had. But that was my own personal tone quest.

Each player has his own tone quest. In the end you have to settle on what gives you the sound you want.

'Tube amps on a budget...'Tube amps on a budget...'Tube amps on a budget...

I stand by my original point:

Do NOT buy a budget amp. You are throwing money away, and will only end up buying a good amp later, and selling the budget crap for 1/3 it's original value. Beg, Borrow, steal, turn tricks, or whatever, but get a good amp. Skip buying effects, and pedals, and spend all your money on a good amp instead. It's the core of your rig. The greatest delay in the world will still give you crappy sounding delay on a crappy amp. Don't put the horse before the cart.

Great post.;)

I totally agree that you should buy an amp that sounds good to you as is and not depend on "fixing it up" with effects. I just don't think that it's absolutely necessary to spend an arm and a leg to get there. As I said earlier, one of the best guitar tones I have heard in a long time came out of a Peavey Classic, and the guy who was making that sound (Van Wilkes) could afford something much more expensive if he wanted it.

Peavey Classic 20.

Through a good cabinet ('60's Gibson Mercury with Jensens for me).

Like butta.

Flame away!!!!!

. . . because I only have like 7 posts, so I couldn't know anything. . .

for 600 you can get a b52 git head.

yea, it's a bit out of your range, but they kick ass.

I have a Peavey Classic. Not what I would call great tone. Has a definite dated tone, also. Not dated in a good way.

I am reminded of a story, though.
I read an interview with Ted Nugent (one of my favs). He said he finally got a chance to play through Eddie Van Halen's rig. He was very excited about it, and had been wanting to do it for awhile. Said he was surprised to find that when he got his chance, plugged in, and played....it still sounded like Ted Nugent.

I've got a B52 combo that I just love (the AT212). Some folks call it the poor mans Mesa--I wouldn't know 'cause I've never owned a Mesa--but it's amazingly versatile. I'm sure the smaller combos could be had for reasonable $$.

How can the tone of a tube amp be dated? I guess people shouldn't play through a Vox AC30, Fender Twin, or Marshall Super Lead. Those amps are way older than a Peavey classic so their tone must really be dated. Everyone should just throw away those old nasty vintage amps and buy brand new overpriced Mesa Boogie amps.:D

I would almost kill for a good vox tube amp. An ac30 or something, i love them, they sound great to my ears but are way too damn much money. I'm going to uni, so i can't spend money on that kind of stuff... I need a sugar momma!

I can't train your ears on a forum.;)

...and Mesa's are not overpriced.

Orange is releasing a Tiny Terror Combo: http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=kq8IshRNuis

That sounds awesome, how much do you think it'll go for?
And are the terrors pedal friendly?

I've yet to hear the tiny terror through just 1x12. It sounded really good outta 2 1x12 epiphone cabs (i believe they were the match for the epiphone valve jr.) however once i heard this little head through an orange 4x12 i seriously thought it sounded just as good if not better than my orange rocker 30 (which goes for nearly 3 times the price of the terror) If you're giging places that the amp is mic'ed or small clubs the terror is all you need. It's orange tone though.. you'll either love it or hate it. (but if you know anything about things that are good you'll love it  j/k)

amplifiers are THE most controversial music topic on the net, aren't they?
