Im basically looking to create some basic electronic loops and orchestral music to accompany my piano recording.

Im new to all of this or bare with me.

But is a midi keyboard my best choice? I only need up to 49 keys on it,do midi master keyboards come with built in sounds?? if not where do i get them from??
Ive been looking at the novation remote sl series

Can you let me know everything i mite need to get me started??

I like the way they try to slam that M-audio 88 keyboard down your throat. The Novation is a fine product. I prefer a 88 keyboard over a 49 because of the range of keys needed when doing orchestral samples. Take a look at Studiologic SL series, as well as M-audio keystation pro series that have better key action.

Bit of a hijack here. Assuming you're familiar with the Studiologic SL series and M-audio keystation pro's that you mention--are the keys quiet? I record a female singer a lot who just needs to play while she's singing. She usally nails the vocal track this way, even if we retrack the keys later. Problem is the clunky sound of the keys picked up by the vocal mic.

This is with her own Kurzweil, but I'm looking to add a midi controller and do the same w/VSTs, so a quiet(er) keyboard would help. Thanks!

Most hammer action controllers I've heard are definitely "clunky" sounding. That's the price you pay for it to feel like a piano!

Have you tried putting some sort of baffle between the keyboard and her mic? Another way to avoid this would just be to work with it. Like you've got the actual hammer sounds on the track! Probably cooler for more eclectic sounding stuff than more "produced" pop type stuff.

As far as the OP. If you're looking for a decent, cheap 49 key controller, I've used the m-audio axiom stuff and its a good little semi weighted deal with aftertouch. What are you using for piano stuff right now?

As far as sounds, most sequencers these days come with a general midi style sampler that has a bunch of sounds. I'd also check out reason. The orchestra soundbank has some very usable samples for classical type stuff, and it's not all that expensive.

That';s funny, because I believe those are are randomized adverts. Have they managed to target them by looking for keyboards in the initial posts yet? I wonder.....

I have both a Studiologic and a Keystation pro. For pure playing, I prefer the Studiologic. Asw a modern controller, got for the Keystation. the keys are really quiet on both I suppose - I haven't noticed any noise.
