Another mix to practice with

Great job. I remember my first mix ever:eek:, and this blows it away. I don't have too much advice, but here goes. I think the chorus effect sounds nice(what plugin is that?), but it's too much. Turn down the wetness level of the chorus.

I'd like to hear a bit more guitar, and a bit less lower midrange on the snare. Somewhere in the 400-1000khz range there is something bothering me a tad on the snare. I'd say eq cut like 2 db somewhere in there. See what happens when you turn up the guitars about 1db and turn the bass down about 1db, it might sound a tad less murky.

Precaution: I'm just listening on my stereo, not a pair of recording monitors(I'm always too lazy to break those out unless I'm actually recording somebody), so take my words with a grain of salt. But these are the speakers I mixed this song on as well.

Thanks a lot, man. I had never mix anything in my life so I think I did pretty OK. This was made on a cheapo $20 headphones, so... LOL. I don't feel so bad now :D The effect on the voice is Reaverb, a pluging that came with Reaper and a Classic Chorus, another freebie. I think I overdid it because the voice was soooooo bad and maybe I tried to mask it a little. Hehehe. I'll take your recommendations and do another shot to see how it goes.

BTW. What you did to the vox on yours? It sounded so smooth. I mean with all the bad singing and everything.
 
A lot of compression. I think I used the LA2A compression plug on my UAD-1 fx card, and the Chandler TG 12413 compressor. For EQ I used the Pultec Pro plugin from the UAD-1. There was also a little bit of chorus, reverb, and delay, but not enough to make it REALLY noticeable, just enough to make the voice sound smoother.

Its the same compressed mess as the first mix !

How did you get to this point ???
What monitors do you use , what kind of fx do you aply to the chanels ????
It would be good to give a brief list of your fx settings (eq,compressor,limiter)
of each channel of your mixing setup. Maybe it will reveal what you are doing wrong !!!

You're overloading like crazy. A little dynamic range is a good thing to have. Back off the master level and maybe there will be something to listen to. Below is a picture of the first few seconds of your mix. Notice all the chopped off waveforms at the top and bottom and the two red indicators on the far right of the L/R indicators. All of this indicates severe overloading.

I probably went to the other extreme in not compressing and making hot enough, but I think most would agree that it is better to go in that direction than in the overloaded and distorted direction.

By the way, I would like comments on my mix also. I did a little flange/pan on a guitar part in the middle that I thought might be a bit interesting.

Love it. No nits, great performance and great mix. This sounds really good to me.
 
Oops. Somehow the practice song got eliminated from my page (operator error on my part). It is now reposted. The image above is taken from the "Homeowner's Association" mix, not "Titanic Love", a song that I recorded for a customer in the late '70's or early '80's.
 
Bit late to the thread, but here's my first attempt at mixing a song, used it to help me learn my way around Cubase.

Any comments or construction criticism would be greatly appreciated.
