does anyone know anything about usb mics?

it looks louder at the start but crackles at the end so it can`t be clipping?
i thought usb was fast enough for a few tracks

That's pretty common, unfortunately. USB for audio is dodgy by nature, largely because USB almost always shares interrupts with a royal crapload of other stuff. It's about the lowest priority thing in the system, so you really can't expect reliably consistent delivery of data even with isochronous communication.

The best you can do is try getting a USB card, but really, the most reliable solution is not to use USB.

is there any way to tell if audio data is being dropped because usb can`t keep up
