Preamp for guitar

Hey guys I had a question.

As of now the only equipment I have is a M-Audio Delta 44 interface.... but am planning on getting some monitors (BX5a is what it's looking like). I am not sure if I am going to go direct in and use Amplitube or something other some other modeler or to mic my Cube 60.

Either way I need a preamp. I was searching and it seems the DMP3 has gotten lots of thumbs up for guitar. I'm looking to spend <$150 used so I was also considering getting a trackmaster used as Ive heard great things about focusrite pres.

Which preamp or maybe another do you think would be best for DI or SM57.
 
The great Focusrite pres are not the Platinum series like the Trakmaster, which is Focusrite's budget line. Focusrite makes some mediocre gear as well as pretty nice stuff. The better stuff is the Red series and the ISA 428 (and ISA 828) - but those cost about ten times what you are looking to pay. I personally don't care much for the Platinum series. For a pre, I'd take the DMP3 over theTrakmaster any day. If you really want a channel strip, I'd look at the Tampa or something by Joe Meek. I'm sure others will chime in here with opinions as well.

Alright so as far as "little league" goes it looks like the DMP3 would be a good choice. For upper costs like in the Tampa, RNP, range which would you recommend for what I had said before (DI electric or miced high gain stuff).

I really appreciate your help guys.
 
I have both the DMP3 and Tampa. They are both great little pres that sound a little different to each other.
The Tampa has a thicker sound than the DMP3 and you can get quite a few different tones out of it. It is more of a channel strip with compressor.
I love my DMP3 on acoustic guitar + certain acoustic instrument and vocals.
I love my Tampa on bass guitar + vocals and certain other sources.

Are you going to be recording acoustic or electric guitar?
If it's acoustic then I'd say the DMP3 would be my favorite. It also has 2 channels which is handy for stereo miking the acoustic up.
If it's electric then I'd have to say I'm not sure. I've not recorded electric with either of these so can't comment.
 
thats true the DMP3 would facilitate stero micing better. Mainly electric stuff though. I'm leaning towards the DMP3
