Picked up a Crown DC300A Series II for $75 today. Is that a fair deal? A little rack rash but fucntions well.

thats a very reasonable deal. make sure the caps are not loose and you got a great amp

Thanks much for the responses. I remember back in my performing days when these were around a grand. Funny, all the stuff I like is cheap now, Crowns and blackface ADATS. Stuck in the '80's.

I now remember that these amps have no speaker fuse protection. So, if I make cables from the amp out to a 1/4" female with fuse holder on the + (red), and plain wire on the black, I should be good to go. Advise welcome, I also remember blowing speakers in my youth as well. Going to use this to power drum monitors. 1 15" and a horn in each. Many thanks

I wouldn't think it would be needed, Distortion blows speakers not amplifiers, Unless they fail and send DC to the components. Check your speakers as they may have HF protection already.

Better call Jim Marshall, so he can take all the distortion out of his amps before they blow all those Marshall cabs.:p

To JWR- you will only need protection if you really clip the amp a lot or use speakers with low power ratings. The DC300 is like 150Wpc @ 8ohms? Even a lot of studio monitors can handle that today. :)

BUT ...... those amps did have a nasty habit of going DC and eating speakers.
So make sure it's working properly.

$75 sounds like a pretty good deal on a pretty decent power amp:) I have one here for my secondary studio monitors (JBL 4311B's) and it works out OK. I am pretty sure I would not feel comfortable using it on drum wedges though. They do have a bit of a problem with overheating when running them hard. I have mine in a specially built case with a fan to help vent it.
