is vista THAT bad?

Why not build a standard x86 box and put OSX (or even better Ubuntu 7.10 (with Compiz/Fusion if you like pretty GUI rubbish)) on it then.

Maybe you prefer being without a machine for a month if a component fails and you don't want to break your warentee and open the case?

Personally I prefer to pop in one of the many spare components I have lying about (each of which has its own individual warentee) and have a working machine back instantly.

DINGDINGDING!!!!

One of the best points that I never thought of. :D

The ability to swap out busted components has been invaluable to me. Between PSU's blowing up and GPU's dying, I could not have coped with having to wait a month, rather than just swapping it with an old part and having it up and running in 10 minutes or less. THE GPU on my laptop blew once (my friends fault) and I was without a laptop for about 2 weeks to a month. It would have really pissed me off if I didn't have another PC to use at the time.

And to whoever it is that has the ridiculously long entry in their location field that completely fucks up the layout of the threads....erm....you're completely fucking up the layout of every thread you post in...I don't care, just not sure if you realised....that is all.

Well I caved and did it.

I bought my wife a Mac book for Christmas.

$1500 for the base model, after tax. (Canadian dollars, but it's par right now, so whatever)

My boss is giving his son's Lenovo laptop's.

He bought 2 comparable Centrino Lenovo Laptop's for $1400.

I got 1 Mac Book for $1500.

My wife never asks for anything, so when she hinted at this, I had to go for it.

But.... I'm just hoping we see the $1500 value back in it in some way.

Wow I missed the post where the person (cpc?) used Windows 3.1 vs XP as an analogy.

That kind of made it worth coming back to the thread though...not really, but a little maybe...

(Vista assumes you're a retard, so you may be better off with Vista. :p)

it's a good analogy , you're just too closed minded to realize.

here's another one for you

windows is like levi's jeans. good durable plain jeans, 30 bucks. can design them any way you want, wear them however you want, with whatever you want.

mac is like hollister jeans. 100 bucks, holes pre made in them, trendy stuff. looks bad unless you get the matching 80 dollar t shirt. did i mention the holes? probably will need to buy new ones a lot sooner than levis

Can you explain your analogy please? I don't get it.

I think you shouldn't accuse people of being close minded when your shunning Mac with seemingly little experience or knowledge about it. After all you confessed yourself that you've only used a Mac a handful of times.

The closed system (with Mac) makes it possible for software to be more reliable - a programmer will know EXACTLY what hardware will be running on the system, so can programme for exactly that. Whereas with a PC there could be any combination of hardware devices or chipsets, which is why a lot of people have issues with certain firewire soundcards and firewire chipsets for example; you only need to look at these forums for examples of that.

I'm not saying that Mac is necessarily better than PC, they each have their positive and negative aspects. But I do think you should research what you're talking about before blasting your opinions (based on your brief encounters with Macs) about the forums.

"I work for one of the largest and most respected bradcasters in the world..."
I knew Pitt/Jolie was an ubiquitous brandname but wow!
Sorry about that - just trying for a little levity.
Macs - been there & won't go back.
PC's - well I avoid Internet Explorer as much as possible, use AVG SOHO & keep my recording comp completely isolated from the internet, (I did explain my isolation & reasonong a year ago & was roundly laughed at but have had the last laugh so many times that it, trythfully, isn't funny).

lol you people keep saying that , but then how come the handful of times i've used a mac it has frozen, shutdown, etc due to problems of mac software or hardware ? that's more reliable? ok i'll take your word for it. you can talk in circles all you want it won't change my experiences. im not the one telling people that their analogies or opinions are "wrong" because they don't agree with me

No, it's a terrible analogy. There are so many upgrades from 3.1 to XP (useful stuff that is) I wouldn't even know where to begin.

There are visual style/GUI "upgrades" in Vista but a decrease in performance. I consider that a downgrade.

If you can give me a one, even better, a few, reasons why it's worth upgrading to Vista for audio production, then maybe I'll listen. Otherwise, enjoy your fancy GUI.

I think you missed my point. It's obvious you've been using a PC for "10 years" and you've only used a Mac a "handful of times".

Stop blasting opinion like it's fact, research the topic before posting rhetoric which has no founding other than your VERY limited experience.

It sounds like you're the typical guy who just hates Mac because it's different to Windows, without any real reason.

Vistas on laptops are the worst, my brand new laptop is lagging harder than my 4 year old one with XP, forget recording on a vista laptop. I couldnt at least.

My brother just bought a laptop from Future Shop with Vista.

They insisted he get a $150 optimization on it.

He passed on that, considering they could not explain what it was they did to the laptop to 'optimize' it.

Anyway, It takes about 4 minutes to boot up into Vista, everytime he turns it on.

Brand new Laptop.

I've seen the same on my girlfriend's laptop (Dell).

Takes forever and a day to load up vista, and once there, it takes about three minutes for IE to open. My Dell laptop, built in 2001, (256MB, 800Mhz) is the minimum spec for XP (or there abouts) and it runs much much quicker than the brand new laptop with Vista, which has 1GB RAM and a 2GHz processor! It's nuts

I cannot understand the guys in this thread that are defending Vista.

Currently, it really is "that bad".

If it's magically working for you, consider yourself the lucky minority.

Yup, I feel royally ripped off that it takes me 5 minutes until I can function on my brand new supposed to be better than the old one laptop.
Imagine my dissapointment when Reaper was running like crap, freezing up the comp all the time and lagging....
Is it possible to install XP if I still have the old cd?

Mike

You probably can, but here's the potential problem......

I've converted around 5 PC's and laptop's for people from Vista, to XP, because as you probably know, XP is almost never offered anymore.

My suppliers still supply XP, and say they will for 6 more months. (At least).

Anyway, 4 out of the 5 conversions went perfectly.

Keep in mind however, if your version of Vista resides on the Emergency Restore Partition, like more Dell's, Hp's, etc. then you are going to lose it, and will likely need to order the $30 - $40 disks from the company, if you ever want to get it back to Vista, with an easy to load copy of all your drivers, and apps that come with the system.

The 5th system that did not work out well, was an HP Laptop.

I installed XP, thus blowing away Vista and the restore partition to get back to Vista. I then discovered, that HP was not offering any drivers for that Laptop, or any other OS's except Vista.

It was kind of like 'Okay great. What am I going to do now?'.

I got on HP Chat support, and the technician helped me located 'unofficial' drivers for that laptop, on a device by device basis.

He was very helpful and gave me about 6 different links to different sites, based on the chip sets thoses devices used. It took longer than usual, but I was able to find drivers for every component for the laptop.

He had this information ready to go, because HP had received so many requests from people who we're switching back to XP.

Why?

BECAUSE VISTA SUCKS.

My laptop is HP.

Can you imagine how more ripped off I feel than before:mad:

Mike

Mike,

Just go online and check ahead of time, if your model offer's the XP drivers.

www.hp.com then click Software and Driver Downloads. Let me know if you need help.

Your laptop is probably great...... it's just currently "broken".
