I had to rush this one before I went to work (IT MADE ME LATE!) It was alot of fun though and definitely a sweet jam. I've got the day off tomorrow, so hopefully I'll have some time to sit down and really go at it.
You were definitley right about his voice being on the "thin" side. I actually had to carve out some of the presence in his vocals. I also think that the bass is a bit too loud in my mix now that I've had a chance to listen to it again. I really thought it was a very important element to the song though and wanted it to be pretty prominent. It's also lacking the intensity I was looking for... I plan on compressing the crap out of those room mics to really get it sounding big.

All in all, it was a very well recorded song and seems as if it was performed really well too.

Thanks for letting us take a crack at it NL5!

Wouldn't carving out the presence make a voice thinner? I'm only listening on cans but the bass has so much top end on it that sounds like a separate instrument. Did you delay it too? Also, I'm not so sure you need compression to get this mix to sound big.

yeah I'd have to agree with NY the bass has way too much high end. The compression on the vocals is really noticable but if you brought the bass back down I think it might cover that up some. The kick is pretty nice although I think it is a little too slappy. Other than that, I like it.

I don't know what you did alovetodiefor, but it's clippin throughout the mix especially noticable on the top end.

Note: You dudes posting a mix should critique a couple too. It's not easy to be critical :D

Any comments at all??

It sounds like its clipping. Also, the guitars sound very fizzy. There is also an interesting frequency thats standing out at me... may be from the kick being EQ'd too much. Thats my take so far. Otherwise, the vocals sit pretty well, they aren't buried beneath all the other madness. Not a bad mix -- see if you can fix those little quirks!

Finally had a chance to listen to mine on my studio monitors. For mixing with headphones the thing came out pretty good. I did two and I like this one the best. Wasnt a whole lot of difference in the two. For those who missed my mix. If you want to listen to both go back a few replies.

The kick seems loud, but other than that, I think this one sounds sweet :) Stuff isn't buried. I think its getting quieter when the kick hits. A little pumping?

Depends on what you listen to it on. I did it with headphones so it sounds great there. I was in my house when I mixed it. I moved the final mix to my studio pc and it still sounded pretty good. I then tried in my car and ipod and it sounds really good. So I left it alone. Everything does come through very nice in the mix and it has a descent stereo spread. I cant remember if I applied a limiter to it or not. I'll have to check. That may be what your hearing. It was rushed, but I really like how it came out. And it plays well on all my systems. Im still a newbee to this but I think I do fine. Well my own stuff sucks (my musicianship needs work). :)

this is all i got:

any suggestions welcome. not sure how to bring the kick out. :(

Hmmmmm, all your drums are pushed back, while the high end of the bass is over hyped and forward. The bass is by far the dominant instrument. The kick was a huge kick, and the fundamental is very low. On my mix I boosted the lows pretty heavily, and blended a sample in with a higher fundamental, although I did mix it originally with no samples at all - so it is possible. Also, I mic drums to get the majority of the drum sound out of the OH/Room mics, and although I always mic the hats, I have never actually used the hihat track..........

edit - besides, you got the guitars panned backwards! :D

Okay NL5... I tried to fix what you suggested. I brought the drums out more and the kick. I also tried to keep the bass guitar down... and bring the other guitars up while still keeping the vocals in front of the mix. Here are a couple tries. The first one isn't at "hot" as the other and has a few minor differences.

What do you think of this NL5?

That is pretty good mix. The only thing, if anything, that stood out are the cymbals. They are out front a little too much, making them seem harsher than what they are. OTher than that, it sounds like a top contender.

I do like where the vocals are. :)

Huge improvement! I was joking about the guitar panning though! (hence the smiley) I had them panned opposite from what your first mix was......LOL :D

One suggestion to everybody -

Please start naming your files with you HRBBS name in them so people listening will know which is who's mix.

Thanks!

Two Mixes. Only difference is a little eq. Now I did these with headphones, so the bass may be overstated. I know bad thing. But Im at home and mixing on personal pc. Now I played through phones and my klipsch pc speakers with sub and they both f***in rock. Spent about 3 hours on both. Crank Em Up

Mix 1 http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=10366

Mix 2 http://www.lightningmp3.com/live/file.php?fid=10364

I listened to Mix 1. The kick is standing out too much!!
Can I hear phasey guitars?

Not a bad mix.

Eck

Yes. In fact, it's the only instrument I ALWAYS eq, and have a "preset" as a starting point.

That Kick sounded incredible in the room. It really hit you in the chest.......

Can you please tell me what you did to get that kick drum sound?
mics/positioning/pres/tuning/drum size/beater head type.

Cheers,
Eck
