Mac is an industry standard?

What industry? Photoshop users? Teenaged Girls ?

I've been using my father-in-law's $3000+ top of the line MAC, and I am not impressed.

Yes - it's easy to use, but the performance actually leaves much to be desired.

The only market MAC has got covered - is the "16 year old rich girl" market.

They should ship pre-loaded with the Brittany Spears discography, and American Idol Complete Season DVD's.

Over-hyped, trendy BS.

Lord of the Rings was done using MASSIVE.

Massive runs in Windows XP, and not in MAC.

MAC has it's place, but the PC is still more affordable, more upgradeable, more versatile, more customizable, and more popular.

You know nothing of which you speak. I know very, very few home users that are using MAC's, but EVERY studio I have been in uses them.

Well, regardless of whose mama is eating which bit of whom...

You may know this already, but be sure to have more than one hard drive in whatever computer you purchase. Performance is greatly increased when the drive being recorded to is different than the drive the program's running off of.

I'm a PC man myself, but only because I have a techie friend who built me a decent computer for cheap. There's little doubt in my mind that Macs are more stable (my wife's has never crashed, whereas mine...), but to get one that handles high-end audio, they can run a bit steep. Soon as I can get some tragically hip popstar to cover one of my tunes, that first BMI check is going to Steve Jobs.

Mind you, I haven't seen Leopard in action yet. Here's hoping it ain't Vista...

I'm only asking because I seriously don't know, but what are your reasons for claiming MACs are better than PC for recording? I know most real studios use MACs, but I heard somewhere that it's just because they have a simpler and more easy to use GUI and don't give you pop ups every 10 minutes screaming that an update is available.

Personally I use Pro Tools on a PC and I've never had an issue with it. I've also never experienced any of the "bugs" you seem to think exist so prominently on Windows.

PC vs. Mac

For me, it's a crashing & stability issue. I've had a few crashes on my PC while working with audio, and friends of mine who record with Macs don't seem to have that problem. The deal with PCs, of course, is that the hardware on my computer is likely to be of different manufacture than the hardware on yours, thus the unpredictability of PC performance. Whereas Mac components tend to be fairly standardized, thus a bit more stable. It's a generalization, but anecdotally I've found it to be true.

But as I've posted elsewhere, I'm not 100% sure that some of the technical issues I've had are ProTools-related more than PC-related. Were I a techie, I might be able to narrow the range of causes down, but a techie I ain't.
