Need help building new computer

I am building a new computer - just need Mobo, CPU, Ram, and Dual DVI vid card.

Here is what I am thinking for "best bang for the buck"

I will be using Windows XP pro to start, as well as UAD cards and RME hammerfalls.

IS this going to be an OK setup? I am looking for rock solid stability first......
 
Sounds good. If you live in a state where Newegg will tax, check out www.directron.com as well, because even if the products cost a bit more, you might end up saving on the total once you take into consideration shipping and tax.
 
Thats very similar to the machine I just put together. I went with the 5600+ processor though which easily overclocks to 3 Ghz, and will save a little money (only $20 cheaper). I also went with an ASUS video card which I have been really happy with so far. It is fanless so doesn't add noise and I have not been having heat issues...

Have you already got your case? I went with an NZXT Lexa case and an NZXT power supply. The system is amazingly quiet, easy to assemble, and runs very cool as well as looking really sharp. I am using the same motherboard you are getting and the whole system is running beautifully and has a lot of power. Most importantly though, it has been completely stable, runs cool, and is very very quiet.

Are you using UAD cards and/or Hammerfalls?
 
I am running the UAD-1 PCI card just fine on similar chipset.

Any reason you're not going Core 2?

I've got an Ausu P5B setup, intel chipset, 2 UAD-1 s. It's rock solid, fast & stable
 
I'd highly suggest an Intel P35 board and an E6550 processor. Your cost will be nearly identical to that setup. Current performance will be slightly better on the Intel with real world audio usage, and your upgrade path is wide open. With the AMD, you're pretty much at end of life cycle on that chip and board. Its really better all around. And for stability, we've tested it with 2 HDSP MADI and 3 UAD cards (as well as every combination you can think of) and its proven rock solid.

So, a p35 board will take the new 4 core cpu's when they come out? Maybe the 8 core?
 
It already runs the 6850 quadcores and all the others out now.
Octacores really aren't on the horizon for Intel any time soon. They have smaller chips, faster chips, and their own version of hypertransport, as well as dual Core2 board...but not octacores.
 
NL5.. A couple of weeks ago I was wandering aimlessly in your shoes. I spent a rediculous amount of time in this forum (and others) pondering which components to purchase. The build posted below is running great. It's been able to handle everything I've thrown at it thus far. I chose the motherboard listed below for several reasons, one being the fact that it used the Texas Instruments chipset for the firewire. It also has a very user friendy interface for the bios. I opted to install both XP and Vista. (They are on seperate drives) I went a little overboard on the video card. I am by no means an expert, so I may have made a few mistakes. I hope the folks in here will shed some light on them if need be. Good luck!

Not at all -- there is a 64-bit version of Windows XP. Just make sure the audio hardware and software both support 64-bit. :D

You don't want to go with a 64 bit OS either way. A 64 bit processor does NOT mean you have to use a 64 bit OS. x64 is a huge mess of problems that you don't really want to get into.
 
I didn't like the lightscribe drive at all. The drivers are intrusive, and it's a huge drain when burning a label. I had one... totally bogged down my machine (E6600, 2gb ram, XP), and the finished product was less than impressive - mono color(dark brown on gold).
I dumped it for a regular dvd rw drive and got a printer with label writing capibilities. Much much better.

Not to mention there aren't many programs out there that have ported to 64 bit...
 
What's the problem with 64bit? I'm running 64bit linux for more than 2 years now without a problem.
 
And all those sequencers, plugin packages, samplers, and VSTi's work great on linux i bet! Not to mention all the audio cards, dsp units and interfaces that work perfectly with it.
