Okay, here's my new kit. Finally got here. :)

Mapex Pro-M Classic Plus 6-Pc. Transparent Midnight Black.

All maple shells. Really nicely cut and smooth bearing edges.
22x20 virgin kick
12x9, 13x10, 16x16, & 18x16 toms
14x7 Maple snare
Stock Remo single-ply heads (So far. Gonna pound em dead then replace them)
Stock coated single-ply Remo on snare. "Cloudy" Remo snare-side.
All hardware included. Seems to be pretty heavy-duty hardware.
Tama Iron-Cobra double-pedal
Cheapo Sabian B8 cymbals - 16" & 18" crash, 20" ride, 14" hats - Cheap but I like em. :D

Sorry for the mess. I just unpacked these things and did a quicky setup and tune. Even half-assedly tuned, they sound awesome. I'm impressed.

Nice. Now go get some REAL cymbals. You'll thank me later.

Very cool man, I can't think of a better feeling in life than getting new drums. I bet that snare is going to sound amazing once you get some better heads on there, I've always wanted a 14x7.

Thanks. What do you suggest? They're all the same to me.

I like Zildjian A series for all around use. I use them because they are the cheapest DECENT cymbals (IMO). I have the same sizes as you, 16/18 crash, 20 ride, 14 hats (new beats). I upgraded from Zildjian ZBT's and the difference was amazing. Very worthwhile. From what I've heard of the B8's, they are equivalent to the ZBT's.

I've heard great things about the Zildjian A Customs. And if I had the money, I'd probably upgrade all my cymbals to this line.

I've never played on anything but Zildjian's so I can't recommend any other brand.

Okay thanks.

A buddy of mine has some Zildjian K's, and he raves about them. I bash on them every now and then, and they don't sound remarkable to me. I don't get what all the fuss is about. Maybe my ears just suck. They sound just like any old cymbal to me.

Bashing K's is not what they are designed for (for the most part). They are a more musical kind of cymbal with great nuances that come out with a lighter, more defined touch.

If you don't have an ear for cymbals (yet) I say spend $100+ on all new heads first. I have a pro-m kit and the stock heads were pure crap compared to some nice Aquarians or Remo pin-stripes. Don't skimp on the bottom (resonant) heads!

I have an old 70s gretsch kit. But I am using a mapex snare made of birds eye maple with cast hoops. It is a nice snare.

You need to get new/better cymbals.

Yeah if you are just gonna rock it you can get by with zildjian A's or a top of the line paiste or sabian. I play Ks and istanbuls and it is a jazzier sound. They are steep though my last ride cymbal cost 4 bills. You can get a good enough pair of highhats by just buying zildjian new beats. As I grow older I like to buy really nice cymbals. Its def a jazzer thing. If you are going to break them stay with the As or Paiste 4000 series.

Cymbals will make a night and day difference to your sound.

Yeah I don't have a light touch. I'm not trying to be a badass or anything. I just play hard rock/punk stuff. I play live a lot, and I'm battling a 200W Randall stack and 650 watts of bass.

I just don't know a good cymbal from bad, so I go cheap. They really all sound the same to me. I don't even know what to listen for in a "good" cymbal.

I plan to replace the heads soon. I usually use pinstripes, but I want to see how these will hold up to my bashing.

I've been playing on and off for 20 years almost. I still have no ear for cymbals.

Eh, it's something most people need to specifically focus on developing. I play mostly jazz, so cymbals make up at least 60% of what I hit, if not much more. I'm at the point where I'm bringing a tuner with me to the drum shop to make sure the cymbals I get will fit into the "chord" of my kit the way I want them to.

Holy crap. No thanks man. :D

Get a bunch of cymbals that cut then. I wold think Nice Paistes. You can have a nice thick ride cymbal. You wont break that. Heavy enough hihats wont go either.

Your disposable cymbals will likely be your crashes and crash rides. Thats just how that goes.

Protect your ears rockstar. Get plugs and try to get the brutal sound from a wedge rather than a full frontal on the amp when you play/practice.

Oh. Enjoy the kit. For somewhat cheaper kits Mapex is a steal. I have played a few mapex sets that I really enjoyed.

Oh yeah I always wear earplugs. Jamming at home, practicing, or live. Always.

Thanks for the input.
