I know that they are old, but have heard that they were once considered to be quite coveted. What do you know/feel about them?

The potbellied ones? I thought the top end on them was pretty harsh, but I'm not a big fan of their titanium tweeters.

If its the same tweeter as the Control 5, which I think it is...it is its own sound. metal tweeter, personal choice for sure, I didn't care for the sound but the detail was better than some more "pleasent" sounding speakers, imo.

the 4408's were in alot of magazines for sure, the "lining up" of the woofer center to the tweeter, so the sound would hit your ears at the same time..potbellied design. Industry went with doing this electronically I guess.

there's a lot of nice things of JBL, the parts list and specs all seeem to be accessible and honest, not always pretty, but honest. diagrams, manuals...
the ones I had were very old and played like new.

Thanks for the responses. I have had these for a few years, and obtained them as partial payment for a woodworking job that I did for someone. These ones aren't pot-bellied. They have about a 6" woofer, and abut a 1" tweeter incorporated in them. There is also a bass port at the upper left side, with an adjustable 'High Frequency Level' knob right above it. I don't really know how good these are (my very first pair of reference monitors), and I thought of, maybe, trying out another pair against them (such as the Wharfdales, ofr the KRK Rokits).

The problem that I am having is that one of my monitors have a bad woofer - which rattles with the lower frequencies. I had been told, by some, that putting another, similar sized, woofer into the enclosure may give very unsatisfactory results. Something about marrying the 'proper' woofer to the system's crossover components. The bottom line, given, was that I would have to find the same exact woofer, or just forego the matter altogether. But shouldn't two woofers (I would replace them both, at the same time) of like size, from the same manufacturer, suffice? I doubt, very seriously, if I could locate the same type of woofers that are presently in this old system.

yeah, the parts (repair) and model (replacement) are obsolete on the 4406.

So you'd probably want to speak with JBL on a good "2nd" generation
....or roll the dice and buy some others that fit and have similar specs.
But depending on your design and depth of details, it could get difficult.

Looking around the JBL site,
they really have possibly the best information available, imo.
Schematics, charts, parts,manuals,network drawings& list...like this..

I would suggest that if you are Going to Replace the Bad Woofer with another that you also Replace the Woofer in the other speaker as well so that the sound is Consistant in Both Speakers cuz it will be quite annoying and with make Mixing harder if One Side has a totally different sound than the other....

I think that if the Replacement Woofer has the same impedance and frequency range as the Old woofer that they should at least be sonicly simular to the originals.....

Cheers

Monitor ebay, I see them come up every now and then. Also you could contact Full Compass

I could not post a url until I have five total postings:)

..it's possible they could help you find a source for them.

FWIW I own (5) JBL 4408 monitors, I use them in my home 5.1 setup. I repalaced all LF and HF drivers with Morel (Parts Express) components, the Morel woffer is an 8" model but I did have to modify/enlarge the LF cutout a tiny bit:(. IMO they sound fantastic. If you are interested I will follow up with the exact Morel model and part number. Morel is an extremely high end component based on Dynaudio patents.
