I dunno, some genres of music are good with drum machines, just like some genres of music are good autotuned and quantized. But I think it's ludicrous for some genres! Would you ever sequence a guitar solo? The fire and emotion you can put into physically manipulating something like a string on a guitar or the hammers of a piano...You can't quantize that!
Again, ive done guitar solo's playing in with a keyboard controller that sound very convincing... Also, I have a (granted, very small) Midi drum pad that I play the grooves into to give it natural flow.. alot of the time I dont quantize the drums...
Ah, but very natural and convincing still don't account for the same inadequacies we see in say tape vs. digital...The physical interaction and all the random physics involved, all the flaws...They make it real. I don't think there's any way to make fake drums sound real and to fool someone with a really, really discerning ear unless you're talking about a genre that's all fake to begin with.
As I said, I fooled Pandamonk... I would consider his ear to be a good one PLUS the fact he is a drummer.
Im not saying I can totally re-create the random hits as can a drummer, but I do believe you can make more than convincing drum sounds with patience and good samples. As you can with most instruments nowdays. I often used acoustic guitar programs to fool studio engineers and producers.. on MANY occasions I was asked who played it on my track because it was a really good guitar track, all of them were shocked to hear it was samples.
while i agree with you, and can understand why it's useful to be able to do stuff like this, but i'd much rather record an 'alright' guitar track and be able to say i did itwhile samples can sound good, i refuse to accept that they will ever convey the emotion that it is possible to convey on a real instrument played by a real musician... i can understand why it might be passable if it was an accompaniment track in a larger (perhaps vocal orientated) mix/song... but in my opinion, if it's possible to 'keep music human' then you should.
not having a go or anythingi just know i'd appreciate an alright recording played by a person over a 'great' programmed/sample 'performance' any day. (synths are different, and 'electronic' drums for obvious reasons)

fair points. somehow i'm not sure i 100% agree with you, but i can't put into words whymaybe it's too early, and i'm only on my first cup of tea, haha.
while i'm not doubting this mans skill, i find it hard to believe that he can make a programmed piano sound more realistic than a real piano, again because of the points i made in my last post, haha. i'm probably just getting too deep with it, but i really do think there's a certain charm with using instruments and musicians you have available... i like how Sufjan Stevens records people he knows... there's one song on the Illinoise CD (i think) where the trumpets are out of tune. i suppose his trumpet friend plays out of tune, so the trumpet is out of tunewhile i'm not saying everyone should go to those legnths, i liked the sound in a way i wouldn't have done had it been a synthesized trumpet. similarly - got a crap piano? record a crap piano and be happy you're not smashing it up for fire wood
i'm not making much sense here, and i feel like a bit of a hypocrite (the number of hammond organs on my recordings is shocking to say i've never actually played a real one) but yeah
keep writing/recording good music
were you the guy who was applying for LIPA the same time i was? how did that go? what are you doing this year?

I agree, natural sounds are natural sounds and they will always have their magic... but the people who hear that magic and cant play the instruments, if they have the skill; can reproduce it!
As for crap piano sounds; thats why we have bad samplers and good ones
Yea I was that guy! I got an audition for LIPA but had already got into westminster so I didnt bother even going to it (A big mistake). Im currently at westminster and its dreadful, complete lack of organization and every other lecture is moved or cancelled with little or no notice.
Think I may do my last year somewhere else, as im starting to hate the location and want to move further out anyway.

this time next week i'm starting a popular music and recording course at Salford University (i took a gap year to slob about, try and remind myself how to play music and 'make some money'... the first two sort of worked, and the last one didn'tah well.) not quite sure what i'm going to be focusing on, but i don't have to decide for a year, so for the next year hopefully i'll just get to be taught in a more structured environment again, i've relished being able to do whatever i want whenever i want this year, but know i'm getting lazy with some stuff, so i can't wait to start again
that's a shame about westministerI'd heard great things about it too. a friend of a friend goes there - phil? half-french or something, plays bass. i don't know how big the department is, so you might not know him. i hope things get better! so you're starting your second or third year? what are you studying specifically?

Second year.. I started the first year late and therfore missed a load of the work.. tried to catch up but the whole organization of that uni seemed to make it an IMPOSSIBLE task. I dont even know if ive passed the year, I found out (wait for it) 3 days before I start. That gives me 3 days to appeal if for some reason I dont pass!
Im studying commercial music, its a study of the whole industry really.. from music to physcology.
Good luck with your course, the first year is insanely easy so you shouldnt need much! What is your course specific in?

Multi-layered drum library's are sampled and put together from thousands of drums hits, you could probably even program in a realistic drum solo if you had the patience!
I think Pandamonk can agree with me as ive actually caught him out with a recording of mine, where after listening to the track he commented on great mic positioning and playing!
