so,

I'm thinking about going analog and need 8 tracks. I'm thinking this would be a good way to go if these units ar syncable. Just looking for some pointers, also can someone give me the once over on mixers?? I'll be doing all outboard mic pre's, so I won't need a mixer with built in pre's, but I'd like to find something with good eq, etc.

thanks.

The short answere is no. If you have two 34 machines I would look at selling both and buy a good 8 track like a 38. Or maybe a tsr8 in good condition.
34,s do not have provisions for syncing.
Or you could just bone up on your mixing chops and mix on of the 4 tracks down to one track of the other 34 and that would leave you 3 tracks to play with.

I don't think they are. I believe the '38 might be, but I'm not entirely sure.
If it has a 39-pin parallel port on the back, you could probably get a sync unit to link them together, but I don't think those do, and even if they could I wouldn't do it with a 4-track machine because you'll only get 6 tracks out of it, and for the probable cost of a sync box you could get a TSR-8 or something instead and have 8. Or 7 if you use a timecode.

If you do have access to two '34s already, you could do the 1960s track-bouncing thing between two machines.

The TSR-8 can be locked as master or slave. It's a fiddle, but it can be done. If you have a particular love for the 34 and don't want to let it go, you could slave a TSR-8 to the '34 using an ATS-500 or something like that. You would then get 10 tracks.
