I'm looking for an affordable mic to record heavy guitars and vocals. Im using a presonus firebox, and ive read that high gain mics such as an SM57 don't do very well with this interface.

This is true to the extent that the Firebox has decent preamps, but they get noisy after a point, and the SM7b definitely needs more gain than they cover without getting ridiculously noisy.

What price-range are we talking here? The other issue is that, traditionally, mics for guitar cabs and vocals differ.

Go into the mic forum, choose "search forum", and then search, Title-Only, for "vocal mic", "amp mic", etc. You'll get a myriad of responses just like this one.

I've answered this exact question about 100 times, so I'll let you root out the answer first - then come back with more specifics.

I realize that vocals and amps require different mics but so far I have been using dynamic mics for both. I'll just focus on amp mics for now because that is what I am mainly concerned with. I have been using 2 sm57's for guitars w/ an old junky interface (everything sounds dead and muffled, but I figured it was the interface/pre-amps) and had planned on continuing with the firebox until I read that these mics are not good with this interface. I just want to get the best possible sound I can get with this new interface. I have researched a million dynamic mics, but I am curious about what mics will be the most compatible or the best with the pre-amps on the firebox. I have read a bunch of threads and mic comparisons, but I am wondering if there is a more specific mic I need to maximize the potential of the firebox. I can afford about $100 - $300 right now, but if there is a mic that will be perfect for me I will spend more.

IME an SM57 positioned at the grillcloth doesn't take too much preamp gain. Same for close miked vox.

Could be that the sound of the 57 just doesn't suit the vocalist it's being used on, and a more detailed mike would. Check out the many good inexpensive condensers around (search function as Cman said). Also could be that if you paired a condenser with the 57 for gtr amp use, you'd get the balls of the close 57 sound and detail of a condenser a couple feet away. Lots of condensers, both large and small diaphragm, could work for both applications.
